Valve Lash specs keep changing
Hello again HT, I've been having this problem for quite some time now. I've done many valve adjustments before and am quite sure I'm doing this 100% correct. The problem is after I've done my adjustments (.006 in .007 exh) after a spirited drive I can hear my valves chattering quite loud again, it almost sounds like a type writer on crack! My engine is out of an 00 ITR it has upgraded cams JUN 3's which they recommend stock valve lash settings and Crower springs and retainers. When I go to check the clearances they are loose again, notably in cylinder 1 both intake valves are loose as hell, all other valves seem ok and are still within specifications. I've done a leak down and there is no leakage in any cylinders also ran a compression check all cylinders are 190-200ish (cold). Rocker arms are fine also. Any thoughts on what else I should be looking at? I'm very frustrated at this point and atm not able to find any other possible things. Will it cause any damage if 2 valve clearances aren't up to spec and running loose? I DD this car every day and am worried that one day it might just give out on me. Any thoughts on this will be great and thanks!

Just a question. Are the spring seat pressures of the valvesprings within JUN's specifications for their camshafts? Many camshafts require certain spring seat pressures for their camshafts even if valve lash is to be within OEM spec. You'll need to find that out first. That may be at the heart of the problem.

I always thought it was .006-.007 in. and .007-.008 ex.
.007 intake and .008 exhaust seemed fine when I did it. Still noisy but these Honda engines chatter somewhat after so many years. Did you adjust them after the car has been siting over night?

Yeah, I've tried .007in .008exh still noisy. Then tried .006in .007exh and still noisy. Also the crower spings and retainers were also within spec for JUN 3 specs. It was running fine all of last year until recently it just began staying noisy no matter what I've tried, but the valve lash definately loosening up out of spec I would say up to .009 on the intake valves in only on cylinder #1.
Edit: Yeah I did the adjustments first thing in the morning every time. Stone cold engine.

Stupid question but did you torque the jam nut? 15ft/lbs IIRC. Lastly check the threads on the suspected rocker.
Im also very curious as to why its loosens up.

I didn't torque them or anything, just made them nice and tight not Hulk tightened or anything just tightned them the same as with the other jam nuts. I did check the threads awhile back and they all looked normal too.

Per Jun Japan(Junichi Tanaka)- From my emails to him when I purchased my Full Jun3 set up.
1. Tappet clearance IN 0.17mm / EX 0.19mm
2. Take center line 110 degree from TDC at the primary lobe in each intake
exhaust cam.
I have Jun springs and Titanium retainers. I don't have any abnormal noise from my set up. I did replace my LMA with the NSX LMA.

Yep, I have this same issue, I've made my valves sound better but not smooth like others and how my car use to be. LMA's are probably weak

Re: Valve Lash specs keep changing
I don't know if it may be LMA related or not but if it were a bad LMA would that cause my valve lash to change right after doing an adjustment? Both of the intake valves on cylinder 1 are the ones going out of spec
