Its definetely not necessary. I hook up relays 6 days a week without disconnecting batteries once, and I haven't got hurt yet (knocks on wood).
Yes, you can overload a relay. They are rated to certain currents, usually small amperages though, but nothing that you'd be pushing it with from a car wiring system.

im having trouble with my jdm foglight switch. i ghetto riged it for a while before i had a chance to really get plugs and stuff. now that i have got plugs it doesnt work. does anybody know why?
Note: when i ghetto riged it the battery was off. when i got plugs the battery was on. anyhelp?
