oil leak help!
ok, this is regarding the metal cylinder protruding from the block that the oil filter is screwed onto......and, yes, the oil filter is put on correctly.
is there a gasket or other way for oil to leak from around the connection between the cylinder and the block? how is that cylinder attached to the block? can the cylinder get warped from over-tightened filters and not make a good seal with the filter?
i'm continuously leaking oil only when the car is running. i've replaced the oil pan gasket and the pcv oil/air breather box + o-ring. the oil doesn't appear to be coming from the valve cover gasket or headgasket (both replaced 8k miles ago). the oil is getting onto the exhaust manifold because i can smell hot/burnt oil.
the only evidence of leaking i see around the bottom of the filter and metal cylinder. i don't see any sources above this location.
any thoughts?

The metal cylinder is an oil cooler. There is a rubber o-ring that forms a seal between the cooler and engine block. Sounds like this o-ring is leaking to me.

is this oil cooler easy to remove once the filter is off? i guess there must be some place to fit a socket wrench on it, eh?

I just removed the one from my old block the other day. You'll need a 32mm socket to remove it. The middle part comes out in one piece, leaving the cooler itself. This will then pop right off. The seal is around $7-8 I think.

The threaded stud that the oil filter screws onto also holds the cooler in place. There is a nut built onto the base of the stud. It just unscrews from the block and then you can remove the cooler.

so the cooler itself is really just a hollow metal cylinder? and slides right out of the block? i'm guessing this seal is a large diameter o-ring?
great news! sounds like an 'easy' job (famous last words) that doesn't require the removal of the exhaust manifold.

Yeah, it's not hard. The o-ring fits in a groove on the back of the oil cooler. Remove the filter, remove the stud, pull the cooler away from the block, R&R the o-ring.

I know this is a wild suggestion, but did you check to see if the oil filter has one or two gaskets on it?
what I mean is sometimes the old Oring from an oil filter gets stuck on the block surface and then the new filter had a O ring... and then it does not seal properly.

Pretty deep. The socket I used just fit, and it's 1" deep....just fit. It's the craftsman one. There are also axle sockets that are deeper.

got the job done! the new o-ring is a bitch to get in the oil cooler's groove and sandwiched between it and the block before the o-ring falls out also, i found the 32mm socket seemed 1mm too big. it worked but i would like to try a 31mm to see if it fit better (i had to borrow the 32mm as it was).
the old o-ring definitely seemed to be the culprit; it had dirt caked onto it.
