Kinetic Motorsport 2.5" SS exhaust system and race cats! (56K beware)
Well a while ago I was fortunate enough to purchase a used Hytech header from a guy I met at a Solo 1 competion here in Vancouver. He has since decided to go with a completely custom exhaust setup - so I took it off his hands and got it in this condition:
It had a small (repairable) dent on the underside - and I found a new shop in the Vancouver area (North Surrey actually) that made custom exhausts. I knew that I either had to go with a Hytech twin-loop or an SMS 2.5" (blasphemy!).
The previous exhaust I had on my car was a Spoon header, cat-jack and JDM Mugen twin loop. Since I now had the Hytech - I wanted to go full 2.5" with my new setup. I knew through owning the Mugen exhaust that a twin-loop design is very heavy. The Type One exhaust was coming too - but I couldn't wait any longer. Thankfully I met Shawn Van Neer at Kinetic Motorsports and he designed a straight - through design exhaust that met my design specifications (least restrictive as possible, 2.5" SS piping, light weight and SMALL tip).
I sent the Hytech to be coated because it looked like *** and I wanted to reduce underhood temps as well. Here are some pics:
The middle resonator is smaller than the Mugen one I had last - so I shouldn't scratch it on speed bumps since it is tucked up and away from danger.
The cat-back exhaust system cost $975 CDN (~$600 USD) and is fully TIG welded. I know the ideal is mandrel bent - but for the money I am happy with the result - seeing as how us Canadians have to pay EXCHANGE, IMPORT DUTY, BROKERAGE FEES, and about 15% sales tax for anything we order from the States. A Hytech or SMS system would have at least cost me $1500 CDN or more.
The rear can is a TIG welded SS unit from Vibrant Technologies - a Canadian company based in the Toronto areahttp://www.vibrantpower.com. It has a really nice tonal quality and good polish. I decided to go with a stock looking tail pipe (3" outlet diameter) so as to not attract too much attention from cops.
I also bought (but have not yet installed) a 100 cell race cat. Once I have my car's fuel map sorted out I plan to put it on for city driving.
The race cat (w/heat shield) is not that expensive.
I haven't dynoed my car in a long time - (I will in a couple of weeks) - but the car feels noticeable more powerful with the new exhaust.
It sounds like a Ducati motorcycle now.

LOL, I just noticed the sp00n sticker on your oil pan How much would it bbe to gte one of those exhausts to states? Was it custom made for your car or is it just ITR specific? Looks like it had to be welded together on the car?

Curious, are those Firestone Firehawk tires? And if so, how can you stand them? I had them on my R and they sucked.

The 100 cell ultra high flow race cat is made by Kinetic Motorsport. It is manufactured in Canada using European internals. It can be made in 2.5" for N/A or 3" for F/I applications. Cost is $179 USD ($275 CDN) the last I heard. I was told it will work well for OBD1 - but to work with OBDII the car has to be tuned very well to avoid CEL. They come with slip fit joints - but you can get them made with flanges like mine.
Call Kinetic Motorsport (ask for Shawn Van Neer) 604 882 9962.
The coating was done locally in Port Kellis, BC

Looks really nice BFR! Let's see how much improvement it has over the old setup.
That whole system should go on top of the car, so everyone can see it. Such a waste to tuck it under the hood.

Hey Big Phat R.....
could you please be a little more specific about your "Vibrant" exhaust....
was on their site and they have a big selection of SS catback products.......
model name and type please......looks like it might be the "V2" muffler......not sure
and upon install, was it a fairly quiet product?
Vibrant is about half an hour, 45 minutes away from me and I would be interested in your thoughts about this product and some more detail.....
thank-you
