Re: Importing my ITR from Canada to US: How it happened
$3800 USD ... wow. Note to self: Buy a truck and trailer.
The usual duty is 2.5% to import to the USA. (I confirmed this with US Custom 2 weeks ago). So they are adding a 0.35% processing fee which is $70 USD. Comes out to $2565 USD ($3400 CAD today).
Certainly would be a lot cheaper to fly up and drive it home yourself. Say $1000 USD for flight, hotels, fuel, insurance, and trip permit.
Barriers would be time (you would need 3 days at least), up to date passport and adding mileage to the car.
And yes US banks can convert to CAD funds. I received CAD funds from Wells Fargo via wire and then a draft for the balance in person. As a Canadian, if I receive payment in US funds and have to convert my bank will charge me 2.0 to 2.5% above the posted rate. The shipping company doesn't want to have to pay that fee to convert.

I'd consider driving it, but might not be the best time of year to drive through Canada. Plus, what if it rains on the R?

She has been caught in our American government chemically tampered rain only once for about 5 minutes after that day since Ive owned heR....
Go get it. Makes a whole other part to the story of getting it. Plus no waiting, or questioning if it ok parked in some overnight lot unattended while Jambo Jim is gettin a train tugger from Wendy behind the dumpster of Hooters. Any problems at the border will be in paperwork to you and you will be there. Rent a trailer, go get it. God forbid there are any problems and it gets left at the border?? ouch...

Sweet man. I'll consider that. In this case though the drive would be like 26 hours. And there is a decent chance of actual snow on the roads in Canada.

In this case the seller is very easy to work with. I have a copy of his license/know where he lives and works etc. But in a situation like this, I gotta take some risks.

Where is the car located? The weather has been great in Vancouver. I think April 1st is when manditory snow tires/chains are lifted from Coquihalla highway. Keep an eye out for a good patch of weather and drive it down

although if the weather is good, it's an amazing drive. Go to Jasper and drive the glacier parkway towards Banff, then if it's you want the nicest drive ever go to Lilloett then Vancouver

Dave i purchased my canadian R in january but lucky for me the guy i purchased it from did all the grunt work of getting it imported into Baltimore, MD. I flew out and drove the car back home nearly 700 miles in January. Through some light snow, rain, blisteringly cold conditions, and it was absolutely amazing. I smiled the entire time, this is gonna be an awesome option for you if you have it shipped to a closer spot in Canada and drive it home BTW i was in Canada this weekend near Toronto and it snowed a good inch or two in certain spots

What recall letter? I didnt even realize there was a recall lol
Im in the process of trying to get the service records for my caR from a stealership here in NY. Its proving quite challenging because they could care less.

Re: Importing my ITR from Canada to US: How it happened
A recall letter is just a standard letter from the manufacturer stating that the vehicle in question does not have any outstanding recalls thus making it available for export/import. It's a liability thing.

Re: Importing my ITR from Canada to US: How it happened
as others said the recall letter is because it is illegal to import a car that has open recalls so they must check to see if it has open recalls and will issue a letter stating that along with the compliance letter

Great info thanks for clarifying. When all is said and done, I think this thread will clarify and simplify the process for people importing caRs from Canada in the future.
