Differential question?Bearings......
I am replacing the differential bearings in my tranny with the better sealed versions like comes in some of the JDM trannies. Before the tranny had the cone shaped bearings that also have a seperate race that comes with them so it was a 2 piece deal.Well looking at me HELMS it says that you have to adjust the preload on the older bearing with shims.Do I have to add shims with this new style bearing? If I do have to add shims how do I know what size? Thanks

Re: Differential question?Bearings...... (speed)
they are not sealed, they are ball bearing vs the tapered roller bearings.
FYI, pretty much all b series trans post 98 use the ball bearings for the diff.
along with the bearings you will need to buy shims. you will need to buy the
right shims to get the proper clearance between the bearing and the case.
you will have to assemble the trans with the diff and new bearings in order
to see how many and which shims you will need.

How do I know if I have the right size shims? What clearances am I looking for?Is there a preload spec with these type bearings or am I just making sure that the diff. isn't moving around inside the case?

pic of tapered roller vs. ball bearing is on our website http://www.team-integra.net/fo...age=2 if you need to see it.
also regarding shims (at least for an ITR LSD->GSR swap) from our site:

The Type-R differential fits right into the GS-R transmission. You don't have to have the final drive gear from a Type-R, its a straight swap. Oversimplifying, you take the open-differential out, take the gear off of it, put it on the LSD, put the LSD back in. Messing with shims which is for the tapered roller bearing pre-load test is pointless and a procedure Honda stopped using two years ago. You ditch the tapered roller bearing that came stock with your car (which you will have a hell of a time finding replacements for, and when you do, its around 100 bucks), instead replacing it with the roller ball bearing cartridge that Honda has switched to. (35 bucks a side from your dealer. You'll also want new seals) Chances are very likely you won't have to use shims at all. If you do, there's also a good chance that the clearance is far less than the smallest shim they make. That being the case, you can easily locally fabricate shims using 100mph tape, the metal stuff, not duct tape. It's thickness was around .004-.005" which can be doubled up if necessary. Again, this isn't likely.
