Default WTF is this noise I'm hearing???

I have a bit of an issue on a 90' Integra LS I recently picked up cheap.

The rundown: Got the teg from a co-worker who had this vehicle sitting outside of his garage for ~1 year or so. It was in need of some minor repairs and I have completed the ones needed to make it immediately drive-able. I have one particular "squeal" that I cannot seem to remedy though. It sounds like its coming from right behind the drivers side firewall in the engine bay. It is rhythmic, which leads me to believe it is a rotating part. The sound is dependent on vehicle speed and not engine speed. From about 10mph and higher I can hear it, while every once in a while the sound dulls to light "dragging" noise with no high pitch.

Car has new axles, pads/rotors, wheel bearings have no play, no rubbing on the tires. What else could be making this noise??????

squealing sounds like a belt. R u sure all ur belts are tight esp ur alternator belt. Right behide the driverside firewall is ur powersteering and alternator and a/c unit if u have one. Id check ur alt belt.

It's dependent on vehicle speed. Not engine speed. I can be traveling on the highway at 70mph and put it in neutral and still hear it just the same as if it were in gear

P/S belt is new, no A/C, and Alt belt is slightly cracked, but has a decent amount of tension on it.

i know but if the belt loose enough engine speed wont matter. I can think of anything that would squeel in that area other than a belt other than a warning squealer on a brake pad.

yes, in many cases it will matter.

I can rev the engine as high as I want when at a stop and in neutral, and no noise. I know there is no load, but do belts see any "load"?

well with ur alt belt the more stuff you have on the more load is put in the alt makin it harder to spin. Anyone else ideas? Im stickiing to alt belt being it the only thing i cant hink of that would make a squealing noise from the driverside between the motor and fire wall

Is it loud.

on a scale of 1-10 (10 being open DP loud) I'd say it's a 3.5.

I will def look into this! sometimes I swear it is almost coming from in the dash, but I was under the impression that there was nothing that could make this noise in the cabin...Thanks!

backing plate hitting the rotor?

or a wheel bearing making noise...

here is how I check it but I've done this many times...
block rear wheels, parking brake and block!
Jack up front end and put on jack stand and run car in the air and listen at each wheel for a roaring type noise...

Have you tried putting it into neutral while rolling to see if the noise goes away?

The wheel bearings are tight and do not have any play whatsoever. I have NEVER heard a wheel bearing make a noise like this. I have already pried the backing plates as far off the rotors as possible.

I second that, and add the intermediate shaft bearing...
It's close to your pulley system & would be synchronous to your speed.
While you've got your wheels in the air, check the location where your axle meets the intermediate shaft, the bracket is right there. It's considerably easier to locate when the axle is turning.

I will check the intermediate shaft bearing, but I also found this tidbit...

cheap *** rubber belts always squeel no matter how tight u get it. they heat up and stretch so pay for the more premium belt. it will save a headache.

Thanks for all of the info guys, I'm gonna disconnect my speedo cable on the trans side if possible tomorrow and see if that makes any difference. The cable makes sense, because sometimes I almost swear its right inside the dash. I'll let you know the results!
