Default vtec is not engaging!.. help!!

i got a 2000 gsr and vtec doesn't seem to kick in.
at first i thought the engine wasn't warm enough, but even when the gauge was at 1/4 level, the vtec never kicked in.
i wotted almost from zero speed in 2nd gear just to feel the change of power and sound more clearly and nope,, no change in power and no change in sound...
what's the first thing i should check when this happens?

btw, i have a distributor leak and old plug wires which im supposed to change within next few days.. i don't know if that has to do with this issue tho.
anyone can enlighten me??

edit: alright i did some research and i should check the oil level and vtec solenoid. where is the solenoid located? and that distributor leak would affect vtec at all?

edit2: lol alright found where the solenoid is. one question, how do i check the screen?

You should not feel it or hear it

LOL. Vtec doesn't KICK in like WHOA OMFG. Its just a slight change in sound tone. If you unbolt your muffler and try accelerating maybe you can listen for it. If not, you shouldn't hear it on a stock gsr very well. Even with intake and header, I barely heard or felt a difference in mine.

actually i have a frd that has a same car unmodded, and u can actually hear and feel.
guys when i say kick in im not talking massive turbo spooling or something. u can feel slight change of power and sound of engine. geez.

i'll check the oil level first and if it doesn't help i'll look into the solenoid.
thanks for the ones with proper answer i was looking for.

it doesnt seem you really have a problem with vtec at all and maybe ur friends car is healthier than yours so you can feel it a bit more.
