Default Vavle Adjustment

Hey. Whenever I start my car from a cold start, I get a werid ticking sound. Once my car warms up to operating temperature (normal idle) the ticking is gone. Then when I rev on the engine, when the RPM is going down, I can hear the ticking again and once it hits normal idle the ticking is gone. Any idea? I think I need a vavle adjustment.

How hard are valve adjustment? Is it something I can do myself if I have the correct tools? I'm a very hands on person but I've never opened up my vavle cover and stuff before.

I've done oil change, filter change, etc. Basically I know how to do the basic stuff on the car.

It is very easy to do. There are a number of tutorials online that show you how to do it. Do you have a Vtec or non-Vtec motor? The Vtec ones require either a modified tool or one that you purchase. The non-Vtec ones you can do with just a wrench and a screwdriver.

Pick up a feeler gauge set from Pep Boys for like $1 too.

I have Non-Vtec (98 GS (B18B)). Do you have any specific links that are detailed about the work? Anything I should know ahead before I attack the job? What does a feeler gauge look like? Thanks.

LS motor....nice. Makes the job very easy. Lemme find a link for you. In the meantime, here are a couple of pics of feeler gauges:

They are VERY cheap and useful for many things.

You don't NEED one. But when was the last time it was replaced? You can get one from Honda for ~$15 I think. Just get some gasket sealer and put some on the edges of the gasket when you put it back on.

EDIT:

^^^Those are the specs for your motor.

^^^It's for an SOHC, but it's the same thing. You can figure it out.

Are you possibly hearing the injectors? Mine ticks too, even after a valve adjustment. Actually, @ 45k miles, all my valves were still in perfect adjustment, so I guess technically no adjustment was done.

Can anyone else confirm that this ticking sound is normal? I just want to make sure that this ticking sound won't lead to other major problems. The last car I brought crapped out a year later. Just want to make sure this car will last. Thanks.
