Default Tranny (5th and Reverse)

Ok here's the situation. I ran my Transmission low on fluid for a few days without actually realizing it. My car would go into 5th and then pop out and it would go into reverse. Then it stopped going into 5th and Reverse all together. Once I realized I was low on fluid I threw some in and two days later I got 5th Gear Back (and now it holds the gear like normal)....but I still don't have reverse. I can't put it into 5th (or reverse) if the car is stopped but if I'm moving no prob. What's going on here? Is there a way to get reverse back? Will this problem go away once fluid has returned to all the gears? Or is it to late?

Hmm that's odd.. it should NEVER go into reverse by itself, since the lockout is supposed to keep it out of reverse UNLESS you go to neutral first. It should never be able to go straight from 5th to reverse.

Does it just not go into reverse at all, or does it grind at all if you try to put it in reverse? Have you tried holding the clutch disengaged for 10-20 seconds before putting it in reverse?

Also how did you manage to run it low on fluid, was it leaking out the axle seals or something?

Possibly damaged teeth on the 5th-reverse synchro hub and sleeve. I've run into that problem before.

It could also be a damaged 5th-reverse shift fork, reverse assy, or blocked/damaged shift rod.

Could be few different things. Only opening the tranny and visually inspecting it will tell you for sure.

I did run it low because of a small leak (assumed it was just from my AC). I've only been running it through the gears in my driveway. I press the clutch in and run 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then Reverse. Problem is its tough to put it in to 5th just sitting in the driveway and I can't get it into reverse at all. But when I'm driving I can get 5th gear with no problem (obviously I'm not going to put it in reverse). Some really weird ****...

Are you going to neutral first after 5th, before going into reverse? You cannot go straight from 5th to reverse, the lockout mechanism prevents it.

I can't go from Neutral into Reverse, but I can go from Neutral into 5th. I'm only running 1st-5th. Then I'll go Into Neutral and try Reverse but it won't go.... (This is just Sitting In the Driveway not going down the Road)

Pop out the bitch pin, stick a screwdriver through the hole, and see if you can manually get reverse. You should be able to fairly easily, even on a dry tranny. That will eliminate or isolate the shifter and shift linkage leading up to the transmission as a cause of the problem.

bitch pin? I'm going to need a better explanation of what that is (I don't know much about transmissions).

Where is that pin? Is there any way for me to get reverse back or is my Syncro/Gear just shot ?

It's probably not a hard problem to find and fix. You just have to get past the hardships of dropping the tranny and the mystery of cracking open the casing. After getting past that, it's all in the bag...well...except for the price of the parts that you need to replace, which could be expensive if you have to replace more than just a couple of items.
