There is no harm in switching from synthetic oil to regular oil. You just won't get the benefits of synthetic oil, like the better resistance to breakdown when hot, and the better flow characteristics when cold.

There is also NO harm in switching from regular oil to synthetic oil. Don't believe those old wives tales about leaks - that's pure BS.

Also not true. There's no reason you can't mix synthetic oil with conventional oil, or mix oil of one viscosity with another. You just wind up with a "blend" whose characteristics are somewhere in between those of its two components.

Sure, you'd be better off putting in a quart of 5W30 if you're low. But if you add a quart of 5W40 to an engine full of 5W30, it's still close in viscosity to 5W30 (think of it as 5W32).

You shouldn't have any problems. As far as why, maybe he thinks the cost of synthetic isn't worth it?

That's the case for me. When I first got my car I was running Mobil1 synthetic, because I found a place that sold it for like $3.50/qt. That was right before my car turned 100K miles.

Later, around 115K miles, I moved away and couldn't get Mobil1 that cheap anymore, so I switched to Valovline MaxLife 5w30. Since I ALWAYS change my oil every 3K miles, I figured synthetic wasn't worth it.

Now my car has over 244,000 miles, still running Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 year round. Over the course of 3K miles I might lose maybe 1/2 quart. So I figure that's doing pretty well.

So no, there should not be any problem switching from regular to synthetic.

Also for the record, the previous owner of my car used Castrol GTX all the time, up until I bought it at 90K miles. At that time I switched to synthetic and I never had any oil leaking or burning problems. Then after switching back I still don't have any problems (other than that 1/2 quart, which I consider "normal" oil consumption).

Thanks guys! The previous owner of my teg always used synthetic and I have been using synthetic since i bought the car for this reason. I dont see why I must use more expensive oil on a car thats really not modified in any way. So since oil does get expensive i will be using conventional oil from now.

I would consider using something like Valvoline MaxLife. It's been really great in my car, and I think the mileage on my car proves it.

"Trusted"? In terms of performance (resistance to breakdown when hot, flow characteristics when cold), synthetic blends are better than conventional oil, not as good as full 100 percent synthetic oil. And the price is in between, too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but they seem like a half-assed solution to me. If you understand the benefits of synthetic oil and you're willing to pay more, then get synthetic; if you're not willing to pay more, then get conventional oil.

BTW, Pennzoil Platinum (their full synthetic oil) goes on a coupon sale at Pep Boys at least once every couple months for $1.99/quart.
