Steering wheel vibration

Default Steering wheel vibration

So after I changed my rotors and brake pads. I noticed I have a vibration on the steering wheel once I hit 60ish mph. I have searched and many said it can be my wheels need to be balanced.

I am going to swap the rear and the fronts tomorrow and see if it still vibrates.

How is it that wheels become unbalanced though? Just like a typically wear and tear issue?

make sure you tightened everything...even I've forgotten to tighten lugs

Wheels and tires come out of balance because rubber wears, tire belts move around, and you hit bumps.

Did you use a torque wrench on your lugnuts? Is there anti sieze or grease on your lugnuts? Did you tighten the lugnuts in the proper sequence? Wheel balance should be checked as well as checking for loose chassis or brake components. Or maybe a sticking caliper.

The two most likely causes would be that the wheels are out of balance, or the tires are out of round. Now, taking into consideration that it happened right after you did a brake job, go back and double check your work. Make sure everything is tight and installed properly.

did you reinstall the screws on the rotors?

if they went there, chances are they broke off at some point (fairly common i belive) the there are bits of the screw left you will either need to grind whats left down flat, use an extractor and remove then replace the screws. or atleast line up whats left with the holes in the rotor.

Prior to the brake job, it was fine. I had no vibrations which lead me to believe that it has to do with the job I did. I mean, I just switched out the pads and rotors. I will definitely get the wheels checked out though since I hear it's relatively cheap.

Ok.....

Did you use a torque wrench on the lug nuts?
Is there grease or anti sieze on your lugnuts?
Did you tighten the lugnuts in a proper sequence?
Is one of the calipers stuck so the brakes are clamped on?

I did not use a torque wrench, although I know that's the proper way to do it, I have used a four way just fine my whole life. I used a bit of grease a while back on the lug nuts, not this time around. Proper sequence, I typically just tighten one, then the one diagonal from it and so on. What exactly do you mean if the caliper is stuck on?

Update.

Just drove car up to 70mph and no more vibration. Freaking bucket meng haha. Thanks for the help gentlemen.

What did you end up doing to resolve the issue?

The grease on the lugnuts will cause you to over clamp the wheels...torque wrench or not. It will also affect clamping unpredictability on each lug. So even if you did use a torque wrench, they may all be clamped at different rates.

If you loosened the wheels and put them back on, you may have been able to even some of that out.

I would remove any grease from those surfaces.
