That sucks - I had this problem in my DA. My solution - sell the car...

I used to stuff dryer sheets in the door vents (where the defrost openings were in each door for mirrors) - when the smell got really bad i just turned on the defrost and - presto - instant smell good. Now that was a hit with the ladies.

I tried a bunch of stuff to get rid of the smell though. I tried to spray anti-bacteria lysol crap into the vents above the engine cowl, I tried spraying lysol and/or frebrez up into the recirculating vents, and nothing got rid of the smell.

Good luck - I'm curious to find out what works. I feel your pain.

i just saw a guy on tv saying how to do this. he said you can buy something called "frigi clean" for minimal cleaning of your evaporator or "frigi fresh" to clean out the whole system.

@ my work, they sell this Wynn Air Conditioning Treatment, it's an aerosol can they set off in the vehicle while it's running AC on full blast with the recirculating button on for like 10mins, and it works good as ****, the car pretty much smells brand new,. . . I'm still trying to find the product online, but maybe its sold only to dealerships. shitty

I had a same problem too. After spraying numerous different solutions, I sprayed Lysol and the smell was gone. I guess Lysol help disinfect the molds and other odors.

Lysol does not always work...I had a problem like this once in an accord I had, and I sprayed an whole can of lysol in the interior while running the fans high on recirculate, and also sprayed it into the fresh air vents under the hood, as well as every vent on the car....
just made the air toxic, and burned my nostrils

the best bet is what has already been said, take out the key components to your A/C ventilation unit, and clean them thoroughly to get rid of the mold, then run fresh air mostly staying away from the recirculate button.

The problem comes from the drains being clogged in the A/C evaporator. During normal use, condensation forms and need to run off. That's why there is a drain that lets this water out.

You'll notice the water coming out from under the car during A/C use.


Check to make sure the system is draining and then clean all of the internal parts because they contaminated with mold.

Duct cleaner sprays might work. Look for Central Air cleaners.
