Is a leaking oil pan gasket enough to run the engine dry of oil?
I just finished taking apart my brother in-laws 97 GSR. He had no oil in the car and caused the cams to seize on the head.
The only place i could find any sign of leaking oil was the oil pan. Would this be enough to lose all the oil in the engine?
I took off the cover for the transmission and there is no oil on the flywheel or in the tranny area, i thought it may have been the rear main seal.
No oil either on the crank side by the oil pump.
It does appear the oil pan has been leaking for sometime now, you can see where the header has been burning off most of the oil.
Im just suprised if its only the pan that is leaking, how that much oil could get out since its the top of the pan that leaks.
only 120k on the car, bone stock.

There doesn't have to be a leak in order for the engine to loose oil. If it has bad rings it could have been burning off enough oil to make it run dry.
If it was an oil leak bad enough to cause the engine to seize, you would see a big stain wherever it's parked.

x2, your ring could have been bad all this time, and been burning it, and not checking the oil from time to time, your bro in law, would never have known the oil was low.
