How can you tell if your timing belt needs to be replaced?
I just bought a 95 LS with 80,000 miles on it. The dealer claims that he knows for a fact that the timing belt has already been replaced by the original owner, but those guys lie a lot.. is there any way that I can tell whether or not it has been replaced or if I need to replace it? Can I take the timing belt cover off and do a visual inspection for cracks etc? Or do I need to take the engine apart to really be able to tell? Thanks..

I have found that a visual inspection can be a waste of time. If they have been on 4 a long time they can still be near breaking without showing any real signs of wear and tear to the eye. I guess it wouldnt hurt to take a look though.

you're better off changing it man. they're only like 60$ if it goes out and you only jump a mark you're lucky, but if it snaps, you won't be happy.

you should try scratching the belt with your thumbnail, if it is too hard to be scratched then replace it.

I would change it....there's really no telling when a timing can snap.....Ive seen my buddy's snap at 60k miles and mine snaped at 180k original miles....I just replaced it with goodyear timing belt from autozone and did all the labor myself....

The carfax says that the car was serviced 2 years ago.. do things like oil changes show up in there or would that be a major service like a timing belt?

Even if the belt was never changed, you're still fine. The recommended service interval for the timing belt change is 90K miles. But if you're worried just change it. While you're at it you might as well change the waterpump and other related parts. Expect to spend $400-$600 to have this work done.

The carfax isn't going to show what specific work was done. Try to get ahold of the service records from the owner if possible.

When it comes to your timming belt and water pump, when in doubt, it's simple: replace them. If either one goes you coud be off a lot worse ....
