Default GSR starter wierd during compression test

Recently bought a 99 gsr not running and diagnosed a cracked valve (0 psi, 180 psi, 120psi, 130psi). Had the head rebuilt, changed every gasket, spark plugs, lined up TDC when installing cams and timing belt, tension etc. Try to fire it up and still no start. Checked fuses, good. Checked grounds, cleaned and good. Checked fuel, pump primes and plugs smell like gas. Checked spark, no good (I'm pretty sure a bad dizzy that I will test later).

Next was to test compression. Starter sounded strong on cylinder 4 and returned 180psi. Starter started whining for 3 and 2 and returned shitty readings (60psi and 30psi). On cylinder 1 starter sounded strong again and returned 180psi. Also note I did this with my other car juicing the battery. My battery holds 12v(when disconnected) over a couple days so I'm assuming it's good.

Any thoughts why the starter sounds like this on specific cylinders?

So your saying when you test those cylinders the starter makes a strange sound and you get low readings?

I would suspect the low comp numbers have nothing to do with the starter.

I would guess your piston rings are done for with those low readings.

Have you performed a leak down test to further diagnose the engine?

Try a different starter if its making weird noises and see if it still makes a strange sound upon cranking.

Make sure you didd'nt install the distributor 180 deg out, this will cause the engine not to fire. Its happened many times in my experience before i even done it a few times myself. Some distributors wont let you install it 180 out and some distributors have keys that will go in either way.

Went to HMO yesterday and picked up a new dizzy. Slapped it on I ran a quick compression check, the starter was fine this time around and compression in cylinder 2 was 180 and 3 was 65 (going to recheck the valve clearance because one on the adjustment screws were stuck). Anyways the car fired up so I have no clue why the starter was acting up. Maybe its an early indication of something who knows.
