Default Fuel injectors - how to clean

How do you know when your fuel injectors need cleaning?

Is it best to put cleaner in the gas tank or to remove the injectors and clean them?

Is it difficult to remove each injector to clean?

Go to the store and buy the Chevron Techron fuel cleaner. Not the ProGard stuff but the actual "Techron" cleaner. A friend at Honda says the Honda Engineers swear by the stuff. I use it a couple times a year even though the bottle says to use it every 3000 miles or something.

How does using a cleaner in the gas compare to taking each injector out to clean it by hand?

What are the negatives in using cleaners in the gas??

Cleaning it out by hand is probably a good idea every once in a while. The only problem is that you can't get inside the injector itself to clean the internal parts. That's where the fuel injector cleaner in the tank deal comes in. Or sending them to RC engineering to have them cleaned professionally.

There aren't any really bad sides to an in-tank cleaner. Just follow the directions on the bottle. Most will have you put it in at a near empty tank and have you drive around a bit before your next fill up. That way you get more of a concentration of the cleaner flowing through the injectors. Good luck!

snap-on has this neat little contraption.. it screws on after the fuel filter.. you disconnect your fuel pump and then fill in the container with half chevron's techron and the other half chem-tool injector cleaner. then just start it up and the car will run off of the cleaning solution.. just let it idle 'til it runs out. not only does it give your injectors a nice thorough cleaning but it also cleans the intake valves and the combustion chamber. you can find it on snap-on's webpage somewhere.. if it's too much cash maybe you could find a shop that'll do it for you

This Snap-On gadget sounds pretty neat for doing the job! Do mechanics use this type of device when they clean injectors??

How about Redline fuel treatment? I just bought a bottle today at pep boys for around 5 bux. Redline is supposed to be good, so why not their fuel treatment?

this is the correct way to clean the injectors!

snap-on has this neat little contraption.. it screws on after the fuel filter.. you disconnect your fuel pump and then fill in the container with half chevron's techron and the other half chem-tool injector cleaner. then just start it up and the car will run off of the cleaning solution.. just let it idle 'til it runs out. not only does it give your injectors a nice thorough cleaning but it also cleans the intake valves and the combustion chamber. you can find it on snap-on's webpage somewhere.. if it's too much cash maybe you could find a shop that'll do it for you
Many shops will do this for you, but they tend to charge like $80, but it is a full fuel system clean. The bottles are good for maintenance in between these cleanings.

I paid a visit to the snap-on website. However, I was not able to find the tool mentioned above for cleaning the injectors.

Any suggestions?

Yes, I saw this item on the Snap-On page, but it is nothing like was described above. I was looking for something that I place cleaning fluid in and then running that through the injectors with the fuel pump disconnected. The item on the web page above seems to be a high pressure air cleaner.

Is there another device as was described above - other than this high air pressure machine?

Dont you guys think that it needs to have some sort of pressure to force the cleaner through the injectors? Im guessing this is the device everyones talking about. You need fuel pressure to make your car run....

I recently took out my injectors and dropped them off at RC to have them cleaned and balanced since I had about 95k on the car. When they checked the injectors, they found that hey were perfectly clean and balanced too and just charged me 40 for the check. Not bad for 95k. I've used the redline stuff about 3-4 times over the life of the car and I guess it works. But if you have massive buildup I dunno if it would be effective enough.

yes that item is exactly what i was describing above.. "fuel injection system cleaner." that red thing opens up and you fill it half with techron and the other half with chemtool. then it has hoses that lead to your injectors that you just screw on. then you adjust fuel pressure on it to around 30-40 psi and start engine. takes about 20-30 minutes.
