Flushing Transmission (MT)
alright, i'm finally getting around to changing my transmission fluid and i'm going to flush it out. the thing i'm not sure about is how much fluid to buy for flushing. i have all the MTF i need for the final fill, but how much is usually needed to flush the tranny?

no... i mean i'm going to drain, fill, shift gears, drain, fill, shift gears, etc... until the stuff i drain is clear (no more crap in my tranny). most people don't do this, they just drain and fill up, but that leaves behind a lot of gunk.

how many miles on the tranny?
ive heard its a bad idea to do what your saying.
tehre are alot of tiny cracks and stuff in the metal that are sealed. if you drain the fluid you reopen all the cracks, and your going to end up messing your tranny up.
i was told this by numerous people so ive never treid it myself.
just drain it and refill it.
just a question. do you change your oil by draining, refilling, starting, draining...etc
waste of time in my opinion.

Easy way to know when your tranny is full, just dump in like 2.5 quarts and let it leak out until it stops, there you're done. A honda mechanic told me this, he's credible as he's the master technician and hes been working for 10 years :-/.

I wouldnt worry about filling, draining, then repeating. The new stuff will clean it out pretty good by itself. As for the magnet thing dont worry about it, theres a magnet in the trans already that catches the shavings.

yes. you should replace the washers as they are crush washers. i believe both of them are the same as the oil plug (havn't flushed my trans in a while. i forget the size. i think 14mm.
the magnet helps but don't kill yourself finding one. Spoon sells a kit. one magnetic drain plug for the oil pan and one for the trans.
for filling. make sure the car is level, pour fluid in the fill hole till it starts to leak out (put a rag over the CV boot you don't want the fluid getting on there.

Doing a drain and refill yourself is just going to get too messy and waste of time... if you really want to do it take to it a tranny shop and have them do it on the machine.
As far as a drain and refill (really all you need do)
The drain plug is just uses a socket wrench, with no socket. Make sure you have the car jacked up evenly and a drain pan that is set infront drain plug or you'll make a mess.
I forget what size the head on the fill plug is but im guessing 14 or 17mm. You'll need to head over to AutoZone and get a pump to fill the tranny back up with clean oil because the fill plug does not face up. Fill the tranny up with oil until it start spilling out of the filler hole. And you're done.

I will answer your question, buy at least enough fluid for 2 drains and 1 fill, if not more. If you are looking for your fluid to be relatively clear before you fill it, then I would drain it 3 times and fill once, since the thread you referred us to says that the first 2 drains would be black in color.
That would require 2.3 quarts x 4 = 9.2
I would buy 10 quarts of fluid in order to do the entire procedure as you want to.

tip: i only perform this "flush" once on any used car i purchase, or tranny i swap in.
answer: purchase 2 quart of Dextron III Automatic Transmission Fluid, and 4 quarts of Engine Oil.
If you're not running EXTREME cold climates, any modern mineral-oil-based 10w-40 should be sufficient. If you're in Death Valley and seeing 120+ deg weather all summer, use 20w-50. I am in California and never see sub-zero weather so I use Chevron Delo 400 - 15w-40
follow tranny fuild change procedure and fill with mix of 1 quart Engine Oil and 2 quarts ATF.
drive lightly for about 30 miles or so around town (a couple days of town driving). the ATF is highly detergent and will attempt to "wash" any buildup, shellac, whatnot and suspend it into the oil. don't go drag racing... just drive like a "normal" person would and don't go cruising at 100MPH for any sustained distance. sure, you *could* go drag racing... the ATF shouldn't negatively effect anything and even the synchros should get a nice boost in shifting speed, but the viscosity probably isn't best for long-term heavy duty usage or under extremely hot weather.
then perform the tranny fluid change procedure again and fill with 2 quarts (you'll need the extra quart due to losses with the pump) of your choice of engine oil.
i epoxied strontium cobalt magnets (radioshack) to both drain plugs and they are covered with iron "powder" with every change (every 2 years.)

I would not do what this guy ^ does. Im sure ATF will clean it, but what about your synchros for those 30 miles. They must be working their *** off If you want to flush your tranny, try http://www.auto-rx.com You add it to your mission fluid and leave it in for 1500 miles. It is a very gentle cleaner and wont damage any mission components. I used it once and shifting performance was slightly better, but than again i change my fluid very frequent. What did surprise me is the amount of debris in the old fluid when i drained it. It gets a from me.
