Exhaust just got super-loud...!
A few days ago, I was driving home and suddenly heard a noticably loud metallic creak/rattle from the rear of the car. I initially thought something was caught in the rear passenger side wheel. So a couple of blocks later, another loud creak, but this time I suddenly noticed my exhaust became quite loud. I pulled over to check under the car but everything seemed fine (one of the b-pipe hangers has gotten unhinged a couple of times in the past).
So continuing home, I got this short-distance hill to climb on the freeway, and I'm just getting this drone in the cabin. I'm talkin' deep, loud drone where I swear I could feel my eardrums vibrate!
I had a couple theories, including running too rich a mixture because I've been tuning a lot lately, but I kicked the tip of the exhaust today and it sounded like something was loose inside the canister. Is this even possible?
Maybe a leak at the joint/welds? Although it's happened in the past, this doesn't quite have the same sound or feel to it.
Any thoughts or theories? TIA!

How old is ur exhaust? Stock?
the muffler may just be shot and time to get a new one..
notice any fiberglass, or fur like material coming out of the muffler?

Sounds like the baffles in the muffler broke apart if you hear the muffler rattling when you kick it. Stock muffler?

Judging by your mods list I'm going to say you have an aftermarket exhaust of some sort.
I'm guessing either the muffler has blown out it's packing or the cat blew out it's packing and at the same time took out the muffler.

Re: Exhaust just got super-loud...!
Sorry guys! Thanks for all your replies. Been a hectic few weeks. So anyhoo, I think I'm going with the thrashed baffling/packing material theory. I have suspected the cat, too, since I was running on the rich side for a few years, but not quite THAT rich. Also, aside from the kicking-at-the-tailpipe, I've had someone gas the accelerator and at certain rpm's, the sound definitely seems to be coming from the cannister.
No, not a stock system, but a Trust (aka Greddy SP). This one's from '99, but I kinda dig how it has the original stamped Trust logo, and not the Greddy. Don't suppose this can be repaired, huh?
If not, do I just buy an axle-back replacement (SP2) that can be bolted or will it be a "universal" unit to be welded?
Much appreciation,
A-dub
PS: I did come across that exhaust poll, and Greddy's SP2 isn't exactly a favorite here, huh? Hehe....
