The past few weeks when sitting at idle for an extended period (15-30minutes) the rpms on my 94 ls automatic would start to jump up and down by about 500 or so.

Just tonight driving down the highway I felt the car start to do the same thing at about 60-65mph. When I got on the accelerator a little bit to catch up to the car I was following the transmission drop a gear rather roughly my rpms climbed to almost 6-6.5k while my car would only go about 45 mph. When trying to pull away from a stoplight the car died on me. The engine sputtered out a little bit the cut off, after cutting off my oil light and battery light came on. Cranking it up took a few seconds. Tried to accelerate and it died again. We cut the A/C off and it seemed to work ok.

Checked the oil level, transmisison fluid, and the coolant level they all checked out fine. It seems if you get into the throttle too hard from a dead stop the engine will start to sputter and almost seem like its choking out. If you roll back the accelerator it will work OK.

Now about a week ago I changed the oil and forgot to put the filler cap back on and oil went everywhere. I am not sure if that would have any effect on this situation or not. The car has 226k miles on it and has worked great up until this point. The car wasn't throwing any lights. No check engine, no low oil, no battery. I'm at a total loss.

Update: The engine won't start now. It will turn over but it won't fire.
