You can, but you're gonna suck, and your car's gonna suck. It'll retard the timing in your engine and it's not going to run as well as it should. Could lead to more problems in the future too.

It will also reduce performance. So if it reduces your gas mileage by 2-3 mpg, that more than offsets any savings from the difference in price.
Just stick with premium unleaded, 91 octane or higher.

Do Not use regular...you'll start to notice a pinging engine noise and it just all downhill from there. If you must, use an octane booster and don't make a habit of it.

Re: Can i use regular gas instead?
Your not saving any money using reg. like someone else said, when u use premium u get better MPG and I've added it up before in my old GSR and I was spending the same amount and who knows what running 87 will do after a long period of time... Sure if u can't get anything else u can run it, but I wouldn't be getting on your car at all and I wouldn't do it often.....

$2 really? Im sure someone will give you $2 dollars at the pump if you asked. Save the hassel in the long run, use 91+

Remind me not to ever buy a used car from you.
Hmmm... The last part of your sentence is true. However, most of the country has 93 octane as premium fuel. The high elevations (e.g. Denver) have had 91 octane as premium for many years, for the reason you have stated. (It's only been a few years that they started selling only 91 octane as premium on the West Coast.) So 91 is already a lower octane from what's being sold as premium in the Eastern half of the country. I don't think I would go lower than that, even at higher elevations.

Some stations here only sell 85 88 and 91, and it drives me crazy when I am trying to fill up the CR-V on I-90 and I have to pay for mid-level fuel

Re: Can i use regular gas instead?
Funny I used 87 for the last 7 years and never had a problem. Never really payed attention to MPG, but if you say 91 or better gets you better milage, I might as well start using 91. like you said 2.00 more or so.

Re: Can i use regular gas instead?
^x2 premium is only needed for higher compression motors like the B16's, B18c's, and H22's... Mostly the vtec motors or built non vtec guys.... but it never hurts to run it cause u will more then likely get better MPG and sometime more performance(not always)....

Re: Can i use regular gas instead?
The fuel is recommended at a certain grade for a reason. If you run a lower grade fuel, you run the risk of pre-ignition/detonation which far exceeds the savings from 87 - 91 octane fuels. The caveat is that running a cheaper 87 octane fuel lowers your mileage such that the cost 'savings' are negated. It may seem a good idea and cheaper now to run 87, but in the end, you won't save anything...
