Beater to Bearable RS Teg Restoration

re: Beater to Bearable RS Teg Restoration
I feel the same way. I like the idea of using as many OEM parts as possible especially considering how many great parts Honda produced that would be considered upgrades for the lower trim vehicles. I'm doing a "Type-R inspired" build with my LS. Drop some weight, improve handling, add a little power while still retaining street driving comfort. I'll be interested to follow your build since it seems you have the same idea.

Small update, a little bit of good news and a little disappointment. I suspected the P/S pump had the bearings going and was causing a very distinct but quiet noise of failed bearings. It is the last thing making the car feel like a real beater. So I went to the junkyard and grabbed a new pump weeks back. Turned out the 98+ pump on the high pressure hose is a different fitting so off I went back to the junkyard. Lucked out as there were about 10 tegs thankfully one was an 01.
The new valve cover got slapped on and the dirty pink one removed along with the suspected bad pump.
New pump installed... sadly the noise is still there. The good news, this pump works much better than my old one so I'm not really that upset about it. Also there is fresh power steering fluid as I did a full flush.
The fresh valve cover
The next thing on the list was the a/c recharge. We fired one can into the system and heard hissing. It turned out the front line in the bumper had an ill fitting, fitting. Burned a can of refrigerant sadly and called it a day for the a/c. The new (junkyard) a/c pump I picked up when I bought the car turned out to also be a dud and the cause of the noise. The bearings are shot in it. My friend showed me a neat trick where you put your ear on a screw driver while on the pump. Wish I knew this before.
The final thing on the list for the day was the transmission fluid. Drained out the old MTF and put some fresh OEM Honda MTF. The tranny shifts buttery like it did before but now there is peace of mind knowing it has been done with proper fluids.
So that brings me to today. I went to the junkyard again to pull the 2 a/c lines I need. I also picked up another mint environment shield with zero damage (current one has a small crack) I pulled 3 pumps off different tegs, every pump had blown out bearings. Sooooo I've resorted to buying a remanufactured pump from my work. I get cost on parts (work at a dealer) so I'm just going to fork a few hundred for one with warranty as well a new condenser. This noise will be gone!
More to come soon. I'm hoping to start the wet sanding soon but I'm pretty ******* lazy about it because of how disappointing the paint has been every time I work on it. Oh and I got some fresh bolts from the junkyard to replace all the painted and rusty bolts that came with the car.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. I'm curious how long I'll actually keep this car for. It's costing me nothing and I can sell it for more than I'm into it for. I actually don't mind driving it but I'm real tempted to just unload it and buy a Type R. The only issue is I'm moving cities and will lose all access to a garage so working on a car could be very, very difficult very soon. As for a kill switch, what ever. If someone wants to steal it they can. It's insured for a good amount and at that point I would just buy a Type R haha, but thanks for the concern. It's extremely rare around where I live to see an integra in this kind of condition.

Because you have done a lot of maintenance on this teg and you've started making it look great, I would just keep it as a reliable daily. Especially since you are moving soon. It isn't costing you anything. Save up your money and sell this car in a year or two, and then buy yourself a type r and have money to spare for a build

Is anybody reading this? I got emailed a link to this thread on the headline article of a honda-tech newsletter. I see you wasted a can of refrigerant to test if the system had leaks. And are using junkyard parts including a junkyard a/c compressor?? Dude IMHO you should not be working on cars at all, how can you not know about the screw driver noise finder? Get yourself a $12 automotive stethoscope. You are wasting a lot of time and money by trying to make shortcuts, but since I am here I will give some advice.
First off it is a $37,500 potential fine for venting r134a in the U.S. Not sure about Canadurr. See here.
Secondly if you are going to work on your own AC you MUST have a vacuum pump, set of gauges, and a 30lbs scale with increments of .5oz AT MINIMUM, and even then you will need a shop to evacuate any charged system that needs service. Use the vacuum pump and gauges to pull the system under vacuum to see if it holds to test for leaks, rather than polluting OUR air. Thanks Good luck at least you are industrious.
As for the noises stop guessing and if you are going to replace something get a new pump for crykes sake.

seriously man ?.....go read another thread then you big baby....
one can and here comes the enviromental **** ....LMAO
He said He tried to recharge the system not find a leak ....isnt that why they sell the Recharge cans ...🙄
But ya we all should bring our cars to shops and not work on them ourselves at all and NEVER use junkyard parts on a $1700 car either ..Lol
project cars/ hot rods have been built in backyards with used/junkyard parts for decades ..
however He just said he is getting a reman pump from his work ...I guess you dont read well ...
This dude has clearly brought this Teg back to life and on a budget and ya I have enjoyed reading this..
I say keep up the good work Prudz....I always liked your Lude builds.

Great resto this is what I love to see! I almost thought it was a 97 with that front end but the rear does have the 2000 back end. Lot of work and time spent here! Check out my Honda Integra GS-R & Civic restorations here! More Honda/Acura's coming soon as well!

Thanks for the positive comments guys. Also I'll snap some interior pictures when I get a chance. I've been pretty busy as I just moved to a different province.
Farlander, thank you so much for your timely advice. This week has been the climate change conference in Paris. I pledge to match the US emission reduction goal of 26-28% by 2025. I'm sure there must be a way to make my Integra reach this emissions goal by then. Hopefully, no government officials in the US read about my leaky a/c system. I just don't have the money right now to be able to afford their hefty federal fines. I'll be sure to keep this all in mind next time I attempt to charge my a/c system.

I noticed you're a fellow Albertan. Props for another fantastic home build alberta ride! I just sold my civic to some kid down the street... I hope he does the same thing with it! I really miss my honda, even though I drive an STi and a Silva. Your Acura looks great.
Fixing the AC in December... In the frozen North! Love it!
Hit up Marble Slab Creamery and get an ice cream cone this January in your LS :D Show 'em how it's done up here!

Now, on to my current issue. I moved to Vancouver as previously mentioned and it's been raining non stop. I started getting a funky smell and knew I've got a leak coming from somewhere. I started feeling the carpet for water and everything is bone dry. I should mention I DO NOT have a sunroof on this car, it is an RS (basically an LS with no cruise control, power locks or abs). I researched common places for leaks and it appears the taillight is a common one. So naturally I took a look only to discover they are not the cause (go figure I just replaced them). After removing about 2L (half gallon) of water from the trunk area I left the car out and watched where water could come from. A little water pooled (200ml roughly) over the entire day. So it is a very small leak. The interesting part is it is completely dry along the sides of the trunk area. I'm thinking it has to be coming from some part of the hatch. I'm kind of stumped honestly. The weather stripping has no cracks, is in perfect shape and is fitted correctly. I think the only way to find out is take it to a car wash and have my gf spray water on the hatch area until it becomes obvious. I'll strip the trunk paneling off just to make it easier to spot.
Other than that there really isn't much left to do on the car as I've done more or less everything I needed to. The only thing really left is to clean up the wheels of all the oxidization (considering using an SOS pad, i know, i know it could remove the clear coat) and replace the rear trailing arm bushings as well the even nicer environment shield.

re: Beater to Bearable RS Teg Restoration
Bit of an update.
I got a call from Burrard Acura yesterday letting me know my gaskets arrived. Drove down there after speaking to the parts guy as another pool was forming in my trunk. Unfortunately for me it was raining throughout the day heavily, forcing me to install the gaskets just as the sun was going down. Nothing like installing parts and making sure all the clips are back in place all by feel lol. I stripped the interior a few days before to watch where the source of the leaks were coming from. I took this picture at the time.
Signs of leakage
Out with the old
In with the new
Issue fixed! At least it appears to be fixed. It's been raining all day and there are no signs of leaking water anywhere in the trunk.
Now I can get back to thinking about other things rather than the horrible smell of moisture in a cloth car. I'm delaying getting the car inspected for an Out of Province Inspection simply because I know I'm going to have to fork out money to pay a tech to replace the trailing arm bushings. With no garage and no local day shops I can rent space from I'm left with no real choice. I'm hoping after the holidays i'll have it hard plated for BC. On a very positive note I've been keeping a close eye on the oil levels and i'm happy to say at 500km, 1000km, 1500km, 2000km, 2500km and today at just over 3000km since the oil change the oil levels have remained exactly where they originally were. I have a healthy motor showing no signs of burning oil! The oil smell I spoke of earlier has also completely been eliminated after cleaning the header of oil residue.
More to come soon.

re: Beater to Bearable RS Teg Restoration
Small update, the car has been running fine. No water leaking after several weeks so I have reinstalled the trunk interior. I just rolled over the 4000km mark on my oil. Another 1000km and it will be time for the 2nd oil change since i've owned this teg. I managed to source a gsr front strut bar, not sure if i'm going to pull the trigger ($80 obo) or hunt for one in the junkyards. I've seen over the years (through watching other build threads) Vancouver's surrounding cities junkyards have an abundance of rare jdm parts for most hondas.
I found a nice set of buddy club P1 wheels for sale locally. Contacted the seller and we are meeting up on Saturday. They are 16 inch wheels. My plans are to order up a set of new stickers and paint the wheels white. I'm experienced in body work so the paint won't be flaking off. I've always been a sucker for white wheels. I've owned several sets for my preludes over the years. Red cars with white wheels is up there in my books. Here are two pictures stolen from the guys add.
I still have my amber lights laying around for a 98+ spec bumper. In an ideal world i'll find a mint red 98 spec bumper somehow, install the lights, finally order the Type R front lip and spoiler and complete the exterior look. Unfortunately I don't anticipate that happening anytime soon.
