if youre looking at gas mileage and rpm placement during cruise so highly....stop modifying your car now... ive yet to see the person who boosted his car "for gas mileage"

you do get about the same gas milage or better when going turbo and do a 5th gear swap from the gsr into the b16 tranny and have that gear the same. im doing that im keeping my ls 5th gear. do that!

I'd say take it. It has an LSD you're buying a 96 Spec/US Type R tranny. Same ratios and final drive it's just out of a civic.

You really have to drive it to see which transmission is more suited for your driving style.

FYI I know that it's only the first three gear wich are different in a b16a vs GSR. If my memory's good, the 4th and fifth gear remains the same. Plus you do have an LSD. Also, I beleive the three first gear of the b16a are the same as the b18c5... I use to read that in a magasine... There were a full article on all honda tranny... The final might be different.

Hope it help but if it was me... i'm a track addict so there is no thinking... I would go for it for sure...

The only downside is that at that cost (500$), your stuff is probably stolen and that sucks!

I hate so much these ******! Try to stole mine 3 times last summer!

I have a B16 tranny in my teg and I liove it. Yeah the cruising gearing isnt the greatest but at least you can keep yourself in check and avoid getting speeding tix. It revs faster and if you add LSD Im sure you wont miss your GSR tranny.

Yeah, I've run both. I prefer the SI tranny on track days but, it's no fun on the highway.

The motor and tranny is coming out of his DA which he just totaled and he had payed 3000 for the motor and install, so i think im just gonna take the tranny and sell of the motor.

Fuel economy is a factor even in racecars. Professional racing teams put a lot of effort into optimizing fuel economy, including by means of gearing. At the hobbyist level, there's no sense making the car's fuel economy worse for no reason, and furthermore, I could see just the high cruising RPM being bothersome if he actually has to drive this car much.

Could one maybe swap the 5th gear set from the GS-R transaxle into the Civic one, so you have a shorter 1-4 and a stock 5th?

Edit: Oh snap, that post was 2006. I assume he's figured this out by now.

As for Salvatierra's question, are we to understand that the engine idles at 4000 rpm for the first hour or so, or that it won't rev past 4000 rpm?

The B16 4th gear is good to 114 mph. You need more than 300 horsepower to go that fast in the 1/4 mile. If you are racing at those speeds, then get the B16, but realize your gearing/rpm will limit your top speed. Otherwise get something with a reasonable top gear or... (my favorite) swap in the LS 5th gear.
