Most car manufacturers at the end of 93 started using the R134, but everycar in 94 and newer comes with r134 freon. Make sure you use some type of gauge to check the pressure in your system. I've seen too many people just filling their system with a can or two of freon, when they didn't even need half a can. Too much freon can cause more harm than good.

You need a pressure gauge to determine the low side pressure. Usually the gauge will have marks indicating what is normal, overcharged and undercharged. If you can afford one, autozone, kragen or advanced auto sell some professional a/c kits with some good quality hoses and guages for like 50 bucks. Then all you need to do is buy some freon, maybe some stop leak, and follow the instructions in the a/c kit. Get the kit with a black carrying case and coupled rubber hoses with metal gauges. Try and stay away from the cheap plastic gauges.
