Default AC recharge

can i put R-134a in my car to recharge it? it doesnt say under the hood whats in there now but i have a 99 LS

yes, I believe all cars after 1992 (or something like that - early 90's I believe) use r-134a

im not sure about that because i had other cars and they needed to be converted

i believe it was after 93...
but yes, all newer cars use r134A.

Most car manufacturers at the end of 93 started using the R134, but everycar in 94 and newer comes with r134 freon. Make sure you use some type of gauge to check the pressure in your system. I've seen too many people just filling their system with a can or two of freon, when they didn't even need half a can. Too much freon can cause more harm than good.

use r134a, but why do you need to recharge it?

its less cold than last summer. or is that an AC compressor problem or something else?

You need a pressure gauge to determine the low side pressure. Usually the gauge will have marks indicating what is normal, overcharged and undercharged. If you can afford one, autozone, kragen or advanced auto sell some professional a/c kits with some good quality hoses and guages for like 50 bucks. Then all you need to do is buy some freon, maybe some stop leak, and follow the instructions in the a/c kit. Get the kit with a black carrying case and coupled rubber hoses with metal gauges. Try and stay away from the cheap plastic gauges.
