98 GSR turbo build advice.

98 GSR turbo build advice.
Hey everybody, my name is Chris, and I'm new to the Honda group. I was recently a Ford enthusiast with my 67 mustang but decided to go this route for awhile. Anyways, I have decided to do a GSR turbo build and put it into an EG hatch. I already bought a 98 GSR block and had it checked out. It's a bare block with very little on it.
I've been studying a lot, and reading forums all night long, taking notes and trying to educate myself as well and quickly as possible. Figured I'd let the ones who do this all the time give me some advice.
Looking to keep stock sleeves. 20lbs boost. 350+/- hp. I would like to hear on what parts would be best to do this build as I'm looking to build it right the first time around.
Starting with the rotating assembly all the way to valves, I would like some advice. LS crank and rods with LC Pistons? What brand pistons? What Cams, turbo...advice PLEASE!! Definitely going to be a learning experience for me. Never built a rotating assembly before also. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

you should probly go back to your mustang, or hit the search button first before you make a post asking a question that has been asked a million times before.

His intention was not to be a "dick". Its just annoying when hundreds of people come in here and post " I just bought a XXXX and I want to do XXX what should i do?" With anything you need to do research. People want to build the next best thing since slice bread, but don't want to research the price or the products ( not saying you want a cheap build, but that seems to be most of the people here). Fact is you can not be lazy, these builds can last for a good time it taken care of.. or burn yourself in depth doing it wrong.
We have an induction section for answers for all of these questions. I personally hit 396whp with a ls/vtec stock block (b16 head), 9:1 compression pistons, eagle rods, arp rod bolts, and gsr cams. Granted now.. I would of done 10:1 or a little higher and probably hit that at a lower amount of boost ( again you will hear pounds has no weight here so get that out of your head at the start).

Good Luck.

Stock cams, head and block until 350hp. Just upgrade the engine management and then fuel system by upgrading the injectors and fuel pump: ID1000's and Walbro 255hp.
Engine management is up to tuners accessible to you and your budget. Hondata S300 and AEM EMS are good options, but you may not need all of the options on the AEM EMS.
Add the following to take you to 600-ish:
Pistons - 10:1 ish
Eagle ESP rods with the upgraded 3/8" rod bolts
Cams, headwork, intake manifold, and a better turbo manifold aren't necessities, they just make it easier to get to each milestone.
An electronic boost controller is also a very nice thing to have. The boost pressure ramps up a lot faster over a ball and spring or bleeder type.

Re: 98 GSR turbo build advice.
Alright sounds like good advice. If I were to do the b16 head, should I stick with GSR or LS crank and rods? I'm starting with these parts first on the list. Any recommended places to buy the crank? Thanks!

Nvm, going with GSR crank, b16 head, wiseco pistons - 9CR, Eagle rods. Sound like a good combo? Months of studying have left me with these parts.
Still any recommendations on where to get a OEM crank for a good price?

I think Rob @TPR usually has a few cranks available for sale. He's usually pretty meticulous about performing the basic checks: straightness, journal OD, and balance.

personally I wouldn't run 9 cr, unless you are planning on pushing a lot of boost. as long as you have a good tuner you will be fine, the car will be more responsive when not in boost at 10 cr.

Re: 98 GSR turbo build advice.
I see. Warning, probably a stupid question. Would it be okay to run low compression pistons and drive it without the turbo setup on the car, like as I gather the turbo parts and everything? I feel like it would be, just kind of slow.
Also, heard through the grapevine it's good to drive the car without the turbo first, I guess to make sure everything checks out before the turbo. Just some questions on things I've read. Correct me if that's incorrect please. Thanks for the tips/advice so far.

Re: 98 GSR turbo build advice.
I assume youre talking about a break in period; I would just build it right once instead of wasting time and having to tune twice. Tuning is the key to keeping your motor alive. I'd say either read 1000x more stuff or (if you can) just go to a few local shops and ask for knowldge. Most shops are cool and will be more the happy pointing you in the right direction, plus that's the best way to find deals IMO (ppl upgrading/ selling old stuff.)

get a magnetic drain plug. run it through all the rpm ranges. engine break in low gear at high rpm, this creates a vacuum effect and forces the rings out to help with proper seating. I am not sure about break in with or without the turbo

Re: 98 GSR turbo build advice.
huh. I am going with the same buildup roughly. Although I see deec2 said "370cc" is that 350 whp on 370cc injectors?? Serious tune and fuel flowing like mad I guess. I have 440cc rc's and read on RC's website after calculation RC440s are good for around 280. ?

Re: 98 GSR turbo build advice.
Alright, yeah I read 600cc injectors were good for my power goal. I received parts today from UPS, excited. Would post picture, but I'm not allowed yet... Just the oil pump assembly, few nuts and bolts along with my pickup. Still waiting to find a decent price for a GSR crank. Most likely going to start a build thread once I get the crank.
