I'm currently using a YS1 cable LS trans...which was sold to me as a YS1 GSR. Arg. It's a street machine..and I'm OK with how 1st and 2nd are on the LS trans, but I'm going to be swapping in jdm S1(b16) 3rd and 4rth gears. I think this will be a very good/simple boosted trans...LS 1st, 2nd for better traction, 3rd and 4th are the only gears that bothered me before. Leaving the LS 5th will be good for cruising highway.... anyone else running this combo? Sound like a good idea without getting to fancy in the trans department?
IMO, youre on right track. Check out my post in this thread (page1).

And for those who dont know..
There are 2 kinds of LS (manual) trannies for B-series.
They are totally different from each other.
Just saying because people refer LS tranny as "too long" or too slow. Well, which one?...

this is how i pick a tranny.

1)find the hp and wieght of the car.
2)figure out its approximate trap speed
3)figure out what size tires ur going to run
4)figure out what tranny at redline in 4th gear will net u slightly above ur guestimated trap speed.

install the tranny with an LSD and go have fun.

for highway cars its a more about brute horsepower then gearing since there is no finish line.

I have a "junk-yard" turbokit running .5 bar on my '95 ls with no tuning, stock injectors, and a DSM intercooler... I have a friend running a very fine and expensive setup on his 94 gsr including a t3/t04e and equal length mani.. Tony, you tuned his car and put down 256 @6psi on his stock bottom end.. He has much better tires and suspension than me and obviously much more power...

When we raced on the street, I killed him off the line and all the way through 2nd.. as soon as he hit 3rd, he walked all over me.. He is a pretty good driver and now runs 12.6 still as it sets... I am going to say that the 1st and 2nd gears from an LS are way better for the street because you don't spin as much.. I do lose a lot of power in 3rd, but he doesn't just pull me alot more in 4th.. How would it sound to run LS 1st, 2nd, and 5th gears for less spinnin on the line and highway driving.. drop a type-r 3rd in to keep it moving comin outa 2nd and maybe a GSR 4th because I want to stay in that boost a while in 4th gear for the streets but not as long as the ls.. I would call this an ideal tranny, but I am confused as to what final drive would be good.. To me it sounds obvious to keep the LS final drive or else it would just drop my 1st and 2nd gears back to GSR ratios.. What do you guys think about this? Keep in mind that this would be for my car after it gets built a lil more pushing lets say 400whp and daily driven and raced alot on the streets with radials

all my buddies with gsr and type r's when turboed hate them without slicks trapping around 106+ they must shift into 5th , not a good idea i trap a lot higher and tach lower and never leave 4th with the ls trans.

my opinon,
I have a ls tranny in my crx with a turbo B18C1 my best time is a 12.71 at 85 mph lol I was bracketracing and broke out on the brakes. my avg trap speed is about 112 mph. what I found is if you dont drive the ls tranny right you will fall on your face. if you dont get the 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th shift right you will fall out of the power band and sometimes out of v-tec and need to build boost. that just plain sucks. I have just started to get better at the ls tranny. when I first used the ls tranny I was running 13.9 @109 but since then every run has been better and better ls is great for daily driving, but still in order to keep in your power band every shift needs to be 8300 or higher.

That is the most tight-geared cable tranny, so compare it to the b16/type r comments.
