Default At what temperature does your radiator fan turn on and off?

Just wondering what's the average temp. everyone's fan turns on and off. Mine was set to turn on at 178 deg. and off at 170 deg. I recently changed it to turn on at 168 deg. and off at 160 deg. in an effort to reduce temps.

All cars even of the same brand will probably have different settings. However, i've noticed that my civic and eclipse (both japaneese) like to kick on at 196 degrees F. Assuming your thermoswitch is good (they hardly ever go bad), what are you using to measure coolant temps?

I monitor temps through my dfi. I did not realise temps went up so high on a stock car. When my tuner set everything up, het set the fan to kick on at 178 and turn off at 170. The only reason I lowered it is because I am trying different things to keep my AC condensor cooler. I don't think the new slim fan I put on the ac condensor is doing the job, so I am seeing if I reduce engine temperature's will it help the condensor any.
So is 168 deg. too low for the fan the turn on, or is there a rule of thumb or something when it comes to engine temps?

I would asume it to bea bit before 200... around 180 or 185 like someone said above.

185. All depends on your thermoswitch, unless you've bypassed it somehow with
your ECU.

I totally bypassed everything and put my fan on a toggle switch. Then I also mounted just a single fan on the front of the radiator and reversed the polarity to make it puch air through the rad. Works great for me. I run about 150-160 constantly.

So you basically keep both fans running when ever you please, or just the pusher fan?
Also, does 160 degrees sound too low for a car temp? I mean is it bad for a car to have too low of a temp? If not I might make it run even cooler!

scary. id have it on an additional switch, not totally bypassed

Well, I only have 1 fan on my radiator. I have the fluidyne, and ever since i installed it, that also helps keep my temps down. I don't think 160 is too low of a temp. But yes, there is such a thing as running too cold. Oh well, so far no problems here.

my thermoswitch went bad.

I bypassed thermoswitch and ran the fan to one of the fuses on the top of the fuse box inside the car (not the fuses themselves but those 4-5 male connectors above the fuses). I ran the power wire to one of those so the fan turns on ALWAYS when the car is on. Keeps car extremely cool.

It's actually good for the fan to stay on all the time, its on and off than puts wear on it.

I also bought spoon thermostat, opens up 20 celcius sooner, I think its like 160 F instead of 180F.

I also got a fluidyne rad too though.
my temp gauge does not even go to the middle, ever.

I might as well lower my temp even more......it shouldn't hurt.
Also, does anyone know how I could get my AC condensor fan to run all the time when I turn on the AC? In other words, I don't want it to cycle on and off!

I have a Mugen thermostat and Mugen fan switch and a Integra Fluidyne radiator...I think I saw 68 celcius on the thermo when i installed it. My car always runs cool even down here in Socal..

when i removed the AC system in my Civic, i left the relay near the condensor installed, then installed a Teg radiator with stock fans and plugged it in. then when i activated the AC system the second fan on the driver side would run til i hit the dash button again. as long as the AC button on the dash was activated, then the second fan would be on continuously. and the other fan on the passenger side went on and off according to temperature as usual.

The Fan will not be able lower the water temperature in the engine any lower than what temperature your thermostat is. Just wire the fan on all the time if you are conecerned, a lot of people on here including me have.

Yeah but I still have my AC, so how do I go about wiring it then?

just wire it to a 12v switched source for example your radio. That way it will only come on when you turn the key to on in the ignition.

Has anyone thought about what the side affect is when running the coolant temp low? No? The ECU is programmed to add fuel when the coolant temp is below the operating temp, which is about 175F, even in open loop mode. Which means if your engine is tuned under this low temp condition, the A/F will go lean by as much as 1 point if the coolant temp happens to climb up to 175F or above (when the ECU switches to the normal program). Therefore, never tune an engine when the coolant temp is low. I personally prefer to see the coolant temp around 185F.

My fan switch died as well and I just wired it all up to a switch and put it in the little panel down by the hood release. When I need to turn it on I just hit it with my foot.
