SOHC D15 Turbo Random Stalling
Hey guys,
Long time member, first post in a long time. So long story short, back in 2002-2009 i built my 1990 civic from stock daily driver, to jdm d15 swap, to homemade turbo, to autox monster. I parked it in 2009 with a blown clutch in PA and moved to CA, many states later i have landed in CO (Front range 5000') and got the car shipped out to me. Since getting it back, i put in a new clutch and installed the creature comforts so i could have a more appropriate street car. Got it emissions tested, working on a duplicate title and CO plates; but very close to having a fun honda again. The problem is i am having an intermittent stalling problem that i just cant seem to crack. It is touch to isolate if the problem was caused by storage or just something else failing. I will try to describe the problem and symptoms below; good to be back to H-T it seems like alot has changed over the years.
The problem: When idling (albeit a low idle) it will randomly cut out and die. This includes decelerating after depressing the clutch (aka slowing to stop) and having the car sit at idle in the driveway (or traffic lights) after ~45 seconds. Cant tell if this is turbo, tune, spark or just car related!?
Fixes i have tried:
- New Spark plugs
- Completely drained gas tank and put fresh gas in
- New Fuel Filter
- Fuel injector cleaner
- Adjusting the timing (seemingly no difference in the stalling issue)
- Fixed any dryrotted hose caps & rubber
- Adjusted throttle cable to hold it open (allows it not to stall but opens up a myriad of other problems, engine idle racing etc...)
The car setup:
- JDM D15b7
- TD04 Turbo (stock 1st gen WRX) @ 5psi
- Running Chrome chipped p28 w/basemap
- DSM 450's, FPR & fuel rail, Fuel pressure seems fine at gauge.
- Stock fuel pump (never was an issue in the past,i have a 255lph ready for install but for EF's its a drag to drop the tank)
My previous thought was bad gas and low injector duty cycle at idle causing stalling, but frankly i am stumped. Any suggestions appreciated i am out of ideas. Located in north denver area, given my lack of recent success i am willing to enlist someone or a shop to help...

First thing I would do is raise the idle to factory specs. There is a process for raising the idle the correct way. Google it.

Re: SOHC D15 Turbo Random Stalling
thanks for the suggestion. I have googled the proper way to set the idle (not using the throttle cable or throttle stop) with no avail. The idle screw seemingly made no difference with the EAV(?) plug removed or in.
bad coil? I suppose i could test it?
any other suggestions or reputable denver folks that could fix this?
thanks,

yup, working on that component of it. I should update my profile but now located in Denver if anyone can recommend a tuner / troubleshooting shop.
Any other ideas?
