Default Small Turbo I have yet late boost?

Okay so I recently turboed my b16a2 which is completely stock. My setup is a Turbonetics 60trim, .63ar, 560cc DSM injectors, 3inch DP to custom exhaust.

Now I notice the car runs great and once I'm over 5,500 rpms I reach my goal for 8psi. However, I thought a small turbo should spool up faster then 5,500rpm any ideas as to why I'm building boost at this level of my rpms?

that's really not a small turbo, if it's a t3/t4.

You might have an exhaust leak between the head and the turbo....

so I should check my manifold bolts?
I don't hear a leak I just found it weird after 5500 rpm the car pulls like an animal but everyone I know is telling me it's a small turbo. So I figured small turbo spool a lot faster than the larger snails.

i wouldnt call it a small turbo my anymeans, large? not really.
you only have 1.6L of displacement you can only do so much with the limited exhaust gas flow. If you have no boost leaks and ur wastegate is fuctioning correctly there is not much else to do so dont worry.

I figured that, the only issue is I have 3inch dump to a 3 inch exhaust and 2.5 axleback which needs to be replaced soon to a 3inch custom exhaust. So it could be my exhaust is bottle necking

well that is a pretty big turbo for a 1.6 my friend had a b16 with the same turbo but he was at full boost around 4500

what source are you using for the wastegate vac/boost source line? This could be an issue too.

if at all possible, use the compressor outlet as the source for the wastegate.

Since I'm currently running 8.7 psi spring in my wastegate I don't have the need for a MBC right now and I have a vacuum line coming from my compressor to my bottom side inlet of my WG. I just got my 11psi spring for an upgrade going to see if I need to install my MBC to drop it down to about 10psi is my goal.

My GT28RS starts spooling at like 3500.
When the car is off (obviously), can you freely spin the turbo blades?

you cant lower the boost below what the spring pressure is. an 11psi spring will only do 11 psi and higher.

for a 1.6 that is a big turbo and will have lots of lag. full boost at over 5k rpm is to be expected. that turbo is much bigger than a gt28rs and even bigger than a gt3076r and will spool uch latter than thouse turbos.

if your goal is to have less than 350whp that is the wrong turbo to have

That's what I'm trying to make is 350. so if I have a MBC I can raise the psi with out swaping out my spring? I just need to run the vacuum from the compressor to the mbc then from mbc to the botton side port of the WG?

Are you tuned? what kind of turbo manifold? I have a .54 trim T3/T4 and reach full boost at around 3600RPM's with a 9:1 B16 fully tuned by myself. I would look for exhaust leaks, check the fire ring on your wastegate and get that **** tuned by someone that knows what they're doing! 350WHP is a lil dangerous on stock B16 internals, but if it's tuned properly it can be done and DD without issues for long time

The car is tuned and idles smooth I just had a question on my turbo reaching boost at 5500rpm. I'm going to rock this setup for a few months I notice some smoke on decel so I'm going to replace my valve seals and check my valve lash. In the winter months the car's engine is getting ripped out and rebuilt with forged internals and shooting for 400hp. I'm trying to decide on staying with some GSR cams or get some ITR's

sounds like you got this down pad, after my build I noticed that my turbo spooled like 4K but then i ADVANCED the exhaust cam (JDM GSR's) by 2deg and it spooled noticeably quicker. Plus i have a .48 hot side you have .63 so 5000+ RPM is probably normal for da B16. My buddy vince has a build single cam with a 60trim and he dosent get full boost 22PSI until 6000 rpm!

imo 3" is overkill i think 2.5 would be fine
as everyone else said a 60 trim is a big turbo, i never heard of anyone running them at 8psi.

lag is fun though when you race a muscle car they think they have you and then bam you passed them,

it still hasnt even been clarified if the turbo is straight t3 or t3/t4. if its straight t3 then i think there is an issue.

also 5500 is right around vtec, my stock block gsr always felt kinda slow until vtec hit, then it ripped.

t3/t4 turbo sorry I just changed the spring in my wastegate to a 11psi spring. I currently have a 8psi spring but my gauge was only reading 7psi. So I swapped the spring out for a 11psi and the gauge reads 10psi now. Let me tell you 3psi may not sound like a lot but I feel the difference. It's tuned for 8psi WG would it hurt if I went up 3psi and ran it at 11psi and the same tune?

yea it can hurt the engine since its not tuned for 11 psi. When it comes to turbo systems dont mess around with them unless you know what you are doing.

YES. You probably already did hurt it since you've been out romping on it.

The reason it reads one PSI low is due to pressure drop through the intercooler and pipes. Plus the gauge could just be a little off, no biggie.

Car is just fine we rechecked all the compression in all cylinders all was well. The car has been retuned for the 11psi spring and a GM 3 bar map sensor has been swapped in instead of the factory to be safe. Car runs great very happy with this little rocket si.
