Oil Type/Weight question?
I just bought a 99 Civic Ex with 48K miles that has been turbocharged since late 99 or early 00 with an F-max turbo kit on stock engine/internals. The car does not burn any oil, runs cool, and has no big issues. It's about time for an oil change. Her previous owner was using Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic 20W-50 on the summer and 10W-30 on the winter. I was wondering if it was OK to just run 10W-30 throughout the year (change it every 3K miles) and leave the 20W-50 for racing events? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Also, should I stick to the Mobil 1 brand or do you guys recommend something else? As far as oil filters go, he was using Purolator and was about to change to K&N oil filters. Thanks in advanced for any help provided!

Just to give more information. The vehicle is adult driven. Neither the previous owner or myself beat on it too much. Don't get me wrong, we have fun with it, but not to kill her. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

You will get a lot of different opinions on proper weight and synthetic vs. dino for turbo cars. I run 10W30 regular Valvoline winter and 10W40 in the summer and have been using Purolator's "micron" or whatever oil filter ever since I heard OEM Honda changed to Fram. I think routine maintenance (every 2k for me) is what's most important, as it sounds like you already know. I read a lot of these discussions in the archives but it is very opinionated.

Rufus523,
Thanks for the info. I do think that the 20W-50 is a little overkill for daily driving, but good for race day. I think I'll try the 10W-40 on the summer time and see how it works. Once again, thanks for the info.

you need to use 10 30 the whole year and change it every 1,500 mile, the earlier the better. You always want clean oil going through the turbo.

jdmhonda,
Thanks for the reply. I think that every 1,500 miles is a little too much, unless you drive hard all the time. I do agree with always having clean oil going trough the turbo.

Rory Breaker,
Thanks for the reply! I'm thinking about going 10W-40 (summer) and 10W-30 (winter). Any cons in doing that? Any info would be appreciated.
