Need advise for a Head Gasket in a Turbo d16a6.
Hi,
I have a d16a6, TT H-beams, 75.5mm vitaras and a .42/.48 50ish trim turbo. The block was decked and the head was resurfaced. I decided to use the stock head gasket which is not metal; it's composite. The head gasket blew and I'd like to purchase a metal one.
I would like some advice on what to get. Would it be worth it to get an OEM 3-layer metal HG and If so, what car/engine is compatible with a d16a6? I am also thinking about using a cosmetic HG, maybe thinner (.027, .030) to raise my compression up a bit. Not sure if it is worth it though. Please comment.
Please point me i the right direction. Thanks
-Justin
P.S. Am I a complete idiot for running a composite HG on a turbo engine? When researching, I noticed that everyone swore by OEM hg's with FI. I just didn't realize that the OEM Hg's being used with success were metal and not composite.

Just use any OEM or aftermarket replacment MLS head gasket for a 92-95 civic si d16z6. I have a beckarnley or w/e in mine and no issues. (made in japan)
and yes composite HG's suck on boosted motors. it pays to do research. drink a 6 pack and read honda-tech for 3 hours, itll save you money

We ran the Z6 MLS gasket in our A6/Y8/Vitara/MiniMe project CRX, and had no problems until we overheated it. I'd caution against a composite head gasket, and suggest that you use ARP head studs when you pt it back together.
IMHO, a MLS Honda gasket will perform just as well as a Cometic, for this application and thickness.
Also, if you are running the A6 head, I'd stick with the factory gasket, or go a bit thicker to lower compression a bit. Just depends on how good of a tune you have on it. If you are running a Z6 or Y8 head, a thinner gasket is in order, depending on how much you decked it.
Hope that helps, and thanks for purchasing a set of our rods!

Re: (CRXdan)
Thanks. So, a d16z6 OEM MLS gasket should work on a d16a6 wuth the stock a6 head? Do I need to get a 75.5mm head gasket or will the oem 75mm work? Im pretty sure it will but I'm asking to be safe. I am already running arp head studs. Thanks a ton; I'm excited to get my wagon running again.

ive run the composite hg on every single cam i built.. and thats alot , with no problems... just use arp studs if its blowing its cause of other reasons most likely.

resurfaced head and decked block. I am using ARP's and torqued them down correctly. I am only leaking coolant through the cylinders. The composite HG was form a gasket set and I don't feel that it's a quality Honda OEM part. I am hoping that the problem is only the head gasket. Cracked sleeve would really suck.

bump to a six year old post!
what is the OEM thickness of a D16A6 Head Gasket?
I have resurfaced the head a couple times and had the block decked, so looking to compensate for the machine work with a thicker gasket.
and what were some web site that have custom thickness?

This will tell you the head gasket thickness - Honda D-Series Compression Calculator by ZealAutowerks
And Cometic makes thicker MLS head gaskets.

why would you spend extra money on a thicker headgasket? buy one on ebay for like 22$, MLS gasket only. Used one on my 500whp eg, and been using them on the multiple motors I've built without issue. Yeah it bumps up the compression with a milled head n decked block, but it doesn't hurt... if anything... its improve your MPG and power.

Been using a Napa Z6 headgasket for about 6 years now. Hasn't blown yet! (And with proper tuning it shouldn't.)

So that’s some info, but I can’t recommend any of them at this point.
