a little worried about my timing (pic inside)
so i put my head on my new block and put the timing belt on and followed the helms. everything was fine, turned it 6 times and everything was lined up. the slash on the crank pulley for the t-belt was lined up with the mark on the oil pump. and the 2 marks on the cam gears were lined up, and the distributor was at the number 1 cylinder.
i put everything together, put the covers back on and went to adjust my valves and noticed that when my cams were lined up the mark on the t-belt cover was a little off with the white mark on the crank pully
is this right or did something go wrong, im worried its off a tooth somehow on the crank. i dont want to take everything apart to check, any suggestions,
Landon

1 tooth isnt gonna kill the motor unless you have some crazy cams, i wish i had a B series motor and could help you out more

yea but 1 tooth will affect performance, if its 1 tooth off ill fix it but i dont know how accurate the timing belt cover is.

If your cam gears appear to be correctly at TDC with the crank pulley like it is in the pic, your fine.
That much of a rotation of the crank pully is most likely just due to the timing belt.
Its mostly important that the distributer is firing at the correct place.

One tooth on the cam gears is alot, I checked it a long time ago so I don't remember exackly but I think its around 4deg. If you were having your gears dialed in, 4deg off could possibly make u lose up to 10 hp and simillar torque. Your pulley looks pretty good, you should turn your motor by hand and make sure that the belt is not slacking anywere. Play around with it and you will make it go away, I had the same thing, but after playing with the belt slack and the gears it is perfect now.

Hi,
i also think that the cover mark is not 100% exact.
but a stick in the spark plug hole if cyl. no one and determine tdc ant then look at the cam gears, that souhld be exact.

Forget the cover, don't go by that.
If you are 100% sure that the crank gear marking lined up perfectly with the mark on the oil pump housing and that the two cam gears are lined up CORRECTLY (alot of people miss-align the cam gears, make sure you did this right) then don't worry about it. Something might be wrong with the cover or your pulley or something...
I always go by the marks inside and I haven't had a problem yet. Thank God.

I've ran into this several times, and while it may or may not hurt performance, I choose to make everything line up. If you play with the timing belt a little, you can get it to move one tooth and the cams will line up, as well as the crank.

it says the white mark in the helms, i know that mark looks red but its the white one.
okay let me ask you guys this, its says to tension the tensioner correctly to turn it 3 teeth past tdc. is this 3 teeth on the cams, or 3 teeth on the crank pulley sprocket.
also i am 100% positive cam timing is correct, the lines line up perfect.
thanks for all your help

Re: a little worried about my timing (Muckman)
your turning it counter clockwise right? I have found that factory marks on timing covers in general are never perfect so don't go by that anyway. Did you plane the head or block?

no the head is not planed, and yes im turnig it counter-clockwise. after i tentioned the belt (greddy), i turned seriously like 15 times and the marks stayed lined up on the oil pump. i guess ill have to take everything apart and make sure, this sucks.

Did the head or block get decked before the assembly? If so, taking material off the surfaces can change where the alignment marks are slightly. Also, if you are using a thicker headgasket, that may do it as well. Sometimes there is extra play in the crank pulley that can cause a slight misalignment.

Why? It sounds like everything is lined up, and there is only one way to put on the crank pulley.
Just put a small wood dowel (commonly refered to as a "stick") in the #1 spark plug hole and rotate it to TDC and check the cam timing.

okay ill do that, and it didnt get decked. but it is benson sleeved and im running a stock thickness cometic MLS gasket with copper spray. i think the thickness on the package was .043" does that sound right, i can check it when i get home.
thanks for all your help.
