Are Japanese “30,000 mile” Engines Street legal for California emissions?
Heres the question: are the japanese engines street legal and will they pass visual and emissions tests for California (like kaywantanabe, or however in the hell you spell it).
THese are the ones for sale ALL OVER The place for $300 to 500 dollars, advertized “with only 30,000 miles” blah, blah, blah.
THe specific engines im talking about are honda 1994 D16z6 VTEC and the 1996 D16y8 VTEC.
Ive been told yes they are and no they’re not. Whats they truth??

they are legal in only one condtion. IF you keep your emmision devices in tact from the previous car. Plus the motor must be out of a newer car

Here's the thing. when I went with my friend to the smog ref to get his LS motor legalized the ref was really leniant. this particular friend had a 95 LS motor in his 91 hatchback, thing is, he bought the motor from his friend, it came out of his 95 integra. that car later got stolen, so according to the numbers the motor that was in his car is now stolen. He told this to the ref and the ref said "ok" and that was the end of that. The ref also registered the motor as a "1991 B18B1" which doesnt exist. He did this because my friends car was a 91 and he had the 91 smog equipment, not the 95 equipment. So basically I think the refs arent really all that strict and dont care as long as it passes out of the tail pipe and the visual somewhat.
