Default Interesting 411 for the boosted minds..

I've seen something very similar posted before, but I don't recall it being as long as this one. Us being F.I. afficionados, I don't think we'll mind

"One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1½ gallons of nitromethane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.

* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster supercharger.

* With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

* At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

* In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8G's .
* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.

* Top Fuel Engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!

* Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.

* The red-line is actually quite high at 9500 rpm.

* The Bottom Line; Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated US $1,000.00 per second. The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (09/28/03 Doug Kalitta).

Putting all of this into perspective:

You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter "twin-turbo" powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.

Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course."

i like that last sentence. that **** is just amazing. but i would like to actually see that someday. no one really has a reference to how ridiculously fast they accelerate, and that would be an awesome example

Yeah, now imagine being in one of the sumbitches when it comes apart or you get nitro backfire in the blower and the motor grenades right behind your head. Even better yet being in a Nitro funny car when the thing grenades half-track. Those guys are a special breed to do what they do.

I have been to many import drag races, auto cross events, and NASCAR races, but NOTHING has comared to Top Fuel Drag Racing! Seeing it on t.v is a joke. You have to be at the track to see the car turn into a blur from the percussion of the engine and heat from the exhaust and feel the entire track shake and the wind when they go by on the big end. That is Top Fuel Drag Racing! Not to mention when you walk through the pits and they are seating the clutches. The noise makes your ears feel like they are going to bleed and your eyes burn and water from the 90% nitro!

Those are some cool facts. I really enjoyed reading them.

If any of you have never seen a top fuel event, mark my words, it CAN NOT be described to you. The TV experience is just surreal compared to what you actually witness when you are there.

From the second they are both staged, and pre-load the motors, you know those ******* are sick. The lights go green, and no matter what part of the track you are sitting at, your about to get passed. They are SO loud that you don't hear the noise, you FEEL it in your chest- it is SO loud it feels like its going to knock you over as it passes.
As you almost "lose your breath" you better be sure you have your ears covered. If you don't, your ears may bleed- and if your lucky you'll still be able to hear. You will most definatley be deaf for a few hours.

Top fuel drag racers are the absolute sickest machines man has ever contrived. Just take my word for it- If you like racing- and you like drag racing... You haven't seen anything until you've seen a top fuel even.

ABSOFUCKINGLUTLEY AMAZING

edit:
and to those who are always yelling "don't gut your cat, don't run a test pipe, blah blah... If you wander into the pits while one of those things are idling, you better run away. If your standing anywhere in the general area and it's been running for more than 20 seconds, your eyes will burn so horribly bad I can't describe it to you. Talk about pollution~! But who cares. It's so worth it!

..Our wonderful machines

Damn, that is some crazy numbers!!! Tu put that in perspective here are some F1 engine stats:
Most of these are from the BMW P83 engine.

* Output of the BMW P83 is over 900 bhp.

* Maximum engine speed is 19,200 rpm.

* In a race, engine speed is limited to 19,000 rpm.

* Idle speed is 4,000 rpm.

* The engine weighs less than 180lbs.

* It completes a distance of 500 kilometres before undergoing revision.
Total production of the BMW P83 is 200 units, ten of which the team takes
to each race.

* Before being phased out the engine will have received 1,388 upgrade
modifications.

* It comprises around 5,000 individual components, 1,000 of them different.
The air intake volume is 1175CFM.

* Maximum piston acceleration is 10,000g.

* Piston speed peaks at 40 metres per second and averages 25 metres per
second.

* Exhaust temperatures of up to 950 degrees are reached.
* Maximum air temperature in the pneumatic system is 250 degrees.

* The ultra-high-speed 130R turn at Suzuka with its lateral load of 4g poses
the greatest challenge to the oil system.

* The BMW P83 endured the highest full-throttle proportion on the Monza
circuit at 73 per cent per lap.

* At the Monaco Grand Prix, the transmission and engine have to withstand
an average 3,100 gear changes.

* The engine block and cylinder head are made of cast aluminium and are
manufactured at the BMW Formula One foundry in Landshut using a
special thin-wall casting method.

* BMW Munich handles, among other things the manufacture of the
crankshaft (steel), camshaft (case-hardened steel) and camshaft covers, as
well as processing of the cylinder head and crankcase. The oil system and
engine electronics also stem from BMW Munich.

* Connecting rods are manufactured from double shot peened forged titanium.

* The fire wall behind the driver is covered with pure gold since gold is the most effective heat shield.

* F1 motors don't use head gaskets.

* In an F1 engine revving at 18,000 rpm, the piston will travel up and down 300 times a second.

* Maximum piston acceleration is approximately 7,000 g (humans pass out at 7-8 g) which puts a load of over 3 tons on each connecting rod.

* The piston only moves around 50 mm but will accelerate from 0 - 100 kmh and back to 0 again in around 0.0025 seconds.

* If a connecting rod let go of its piston at maximum engine speed, the piston would have enough energy to travel almost two miles vertically.

* If a water hose were to blow off, the complete cooling system would empty in just over a second.

More nice facts!

Racing is good for street cars in the long run. Technology filters down to us sooner or later.

I'd really like to see the Vette with the 200mph head star and a dragster race, just to give an idea of how fast they really are. Good post. Awesome information. That is one expensive *** sport

"In an F1 engine revving at 18,000 rpm, the piston will travel up and down 300 times a second."

So thats one piston firing every revolution, meaning that all the cylinders fire every revolution? That seems wrong =P
Our's only fire once everyother rev.

18,000/60 = 300. He said up and down 300 times, not 300 power strokes.
