Default hydro lock vs. blown headgasket

Like everyone else I have heard many people say they sucked up water and hydro locked their motor with a CAI.

I have now taken apart two (not many I realize) motors where the headgaskets were blown or not sealing, and the cylinders were both times FULL of water/coolant. On the cx motor there was probably a full cup on top of each piston.

I've never heard of anyone hydro-locking a motor from a blown headgasket. People blow headgaskets with F-I all the time, get water in the cylinders, and sometimes even dyno or drag the car like this without any problems. So why would sucking a small amount through an intake cause hydro-lock while a blown headgasket wouldn't?

I think it's all about the amounts of water that get sucked into your engine. I myself have never heard of anyone getting into Hydro lock. I blew a headgasket on my eclipse so badly that the car wouldn't run because there was so much colant and water in the cylinder. I think if you were to sink your cold air intake into water and floor your car, you would get so much water that you would run into hydro lock. Personally I think the fear of Hydro lock was placed by AEM to sell those water bypass valve things.

This is a long shot but maybe its because there is a hole in the gasket to push it back out.

how much water was in that sucker?

when i got my motor, the oil wasnt drained and it looked and had the density of light brown chocolate milk..

the water that you see in the cylinders is just the stuff that comes out of the head when you pull it off. For a cylinder to hydro lock due to a blown head gasket the gasket would have to be pissing in worse then i have ever seen and i have done head jobs on cars that you can not see out the back window due to all of the smoke.

well in my hatch on the stock cx motor, it would overheat all the way in about 1 mile, put it this way.... when I picked it up I used 7 gallosn of water to get it home which was 6 miles away, I could NOT see out of the rear window at all

this was a first for me:
when we dropped the exhaust, water/coolant literally poured out, I mean poured not just a little
