how to test seals on turbo?
i have a gt3076r BB turbo and i think the seals might be bad in it. i had it installed in my car and it was blowing oil out both the hot and cold side. after i removed it i realized that the problem could have been because i didnot have the crank case properly vented. is there any way to test the seals to see if they are bad short of sending it out to get tested?

Remember, "seals" are not some set of rubber grommets that just "go bad" because of wear or sitting in bad oil. What you're describing is the "oil sealing ring" that acts like a piston ring on back of the turbine wheel. Those sealing rings are especially sensitive to oil pressure, center section orientation, and return line orientation . Even the GT3076R with its internal regulator, needs an additional 7/16 .030" restrictor at the turbo inlet in order to regulate the oil pressure to 22psi.
What you need to tell us is:
A) What your oil pressure is at the oil line at cold start (more important than even Wide Open throttle)
B) what specific restrictor that you're currently using (if using one at all)
C) Show a picture of the orientation of the turbocharger itself (It could be the way the oil return line itself is angled
D) Picture of the return line (if possible)
E) Any previous symptoms prior to the use of the turbo.... (No use of the required water lines, any radial or axial shaft "play" , etc.) ... Please note that ALL ball-bearing turbochargers when used for a quite few cycles will experience some axial play, but that's because the steel bearings are wearing down, which they all do a little...that's why its normal.
Once we get that information, I'm sure all of us will chip in to help...

1. i dont know the pressure.
2. i was using a .30 restrictor.
3. turbo was set up on B series ram horn.
4. return line was fee of kinks or bends.
5. i picked the turbo up second hand and it sat for a while in my garage.
reason i am asking is i want to sell it and want to price accordingly.

Water lines?
I would advice against selling it until you get the turbo a full check, balance and workup. Otherwise, you could be held liable for knowingly selling a bad product.
Sometimes you have to invest in something to get a higher profit later on.

the return line came out of the turbo with a 45 degree fitting. then from there it was a flexable line to a 10 an bung in the oil pan. yes i was running water lines. hard line from the block and flexable back to the radiator.
thanks for the advise. what i am getting from this is there is really no way of testing the thing with out sending it out.

pretty much, if it didn't smoke on the car I wouldn't worry too much.
filling the CHRA with oil won't work either as the seals only expand under pressure. any oil put into the CHRA off the car will leak out through both seals

now when you say blowing what do you mean?
it's rare that a bb CHRA will have two seals fail at once, unless oil pressure was too high (every turbo car needs an oil pressure gauge imo)

it was leaking on both sides so i am thinking the pressure was too high. like i said i dont have the crank case vented and the air breather on the VC was capped. i didnt think of that effecting things until after everything was taken apart.

I'm thinking that if the orientation of the center section was not proper regardless of using an oil restrictor, that could be one of the main causes. again, these are my thoughts, but we cannot be sure without some additional pictures of the aforementioned areas in order to confirm.
