Re: how much power can the stock ignition handle? (SiRkid)
I have personally seen the stock ignition setup make 300hp, but I'm sure others have their own opinions. At the very least, for something thats going to make lots of power I always get an external coil like an MSD to get the coil away from the hot distributor and use a good set of MSD wires as well, but again, thats just my personal preference.

Re: how much power can the stock ignition handle? (g2turbo)
I tuned a B16A turbo that made 467 on stock ignition, Cheezefrogs's car made somewhere around 575whp on stock ignition.

Re: how much power can the stock ignition handle? (SiRkid)
He asked two questions.
How much can stock handle and it is worth upgrading.
Answers:
Alot, and yes.
Sure, your car can run fine with some 24 ga. wire wrapped around the dist cap and spark plugs, but why miss out on horsepower (and possibly fuel economy)?
Once I get another MSD, I guess I'll have to do a with and without dyno. Don't expect it anytime soon, I think my wife is about to ground me from working on my car.

I'm still debating on an MSD 6a box or not. I have heard people complain about their MSD box with Hondata.

Re: how much power can the stock ignition handle? (0x64)
In my case I had many reasons why I upgraded my ignition to MSD 6A and Blaster SS coil.
1) I would always get intermittent CEL's that had to do with the distributor.
2) My ICM (ignitor) was on its way out--those pos's are expensive.
3) My coil was bad--one actually blew up, but thats a different story.
4) Every time I troubleshooted my problems every component came out to be outside of factory specs.
5) With the power Im going to be putting out, why keep the ignition system the only stock part on the whole damn motor---I didnt want any worries.
I upgraded to that setup and Im happier now with it. Im not sure about a stock ecu, but with my EMS I was able to take the ICM out of the picture. The stock honda ICM is ****, and is IMO a highly unreliable part--we all know that turbo is already unreliable for the most part, so why add to it.
I would say that is a good upgrade for what it costs. Also for piece of mind.

I'll be running a modest 200-220whp on my stock d-series in a couple of weeks... I have the MSD 10.9 wires and NGK G-Power plugs one step colder, I may upgrade to an external coil if I feel like it or if I have problems. It would be easy to modify the distributer cap to run an external coil, so why not.
Man, this thread is a few years old! Back from the dead twice now!
