Default Downpipe started smoking

So I made it all the way across the country, once I get here a couple days later my downpipe is just smoking like crazy, like LOTS OF SMOKE only visible at a stop. Its lighter smoke . Not exactly white but close, smells awful. Its coming from the flex area. It only happens when I get on the highway as far as I can tell. I let the car idle for 45 minutes jacked up yesterday and NO smoke at all. Changed plugs out while I was at it.

I need to see if its from spooling the turbo up or just from the high speeds. Any ideas? The turbo is only 3000 miles old gtx2867 so I doubt its leaking oil

Hard to say. Smell awful how? Sweet with coolant? Burned oil? May be crankcase pressure causing oil to back up the return line. I've seen that before. Especially with those damned Moroso pans.

Try and be more specific if you could.

Not coolant, definitely oil or grease, I just checked my oil again, so weird. I filled it up to the second line on the dipstick when I changed my oil a few days ago. Checked it today to see if I'm burning oil or something and its super high on the dipstick... Like double what it should be. But I checked the oil when the car had run for 2-3 mins before, today I checked it completely cold... I do have an oil cooler.

Does the oil cooler have an internal thermostat to ONLY open when the oil comes to proper temperature?

Did you keep the stock PCV system, or go nuts with an aftermarket company?

Link us your build thread again, so we don't ask redundant questions.

Pull the plugs make sure its not the motor

If those look good

Drop the down pipe and check the turbo for shaft play

there won't be any. Not from what he's describing. Ball-bearing CHRAs display their issues a little differently from journal bearing ones. Plus, he has the correct hardware for that particular GX2867R, from what I recall... His entire build thread had his oil return and feed setup in detail..(That's why I'm asking him to repost it showing both oil feed and return lines)

... Unless, like many lately, too much crankcase pressure because people are removing the PCV system completely, and not using the right equipment with their catch can systems to compensate for the vacuum in deceleration causing overpressurization in the crankcase that affects the oil going to the return line, in effect, causing a backup, which overpressurizes the turbo itself.

I believe it to be more in the engine itself, in an area in which the plugs won't say much. If he's getting good combustion burn with good turnover, the plugs may not show the signs you're thinking. He needs to give a better description of his symptoms. But from what he's stating so far, sounds like its more in the engine than anything.

daboy155;You always check oil when its cold on the dipstick. Never hot or immediately after the car was running, it will give false reading because it was at operating temperature and higher oil pressures.

The oil cooler has an external thermostat i installed which is set for 180F. The plugs were pretty foul, charcoalish, but I am running pretty rich. I got under there and noticed the flex pipe is scraping pretty bad, there might even be a small hole where smoke could come out? But i doubt it would smell so burned. I took a video but it's horrible, the smoke is light so it's hard to see and there wasn't much when I got under to take the vid.

It comes out like 10x more than that right after I get off the highway. Driving around town under 30 mph it doesn't happen at all.

Could too much oil in the car do it, do you think i blew a seal or something?

My PCV is taken off completely, the catch can is vented. It runs from where PCV was to the valve cover like this

(that is not mine i have a real catch can)

Why are you not tuned? That's one area to address later, but this seems more mechanical... Either way, as turbohatchy says, it could easily be a symptom

makes sense. Are you venting your exhaust dumptube into the atmosphere? because even a bad tune, may cause you to run so rich, that the dumpetube is expelling even more then the exhaust.

That's exhaust smoke from a hole in your exhaust!!! Nothing more The hole could be from the flex pipe, or a simple exhaust leak, from a crack in the flex or other part of the exhaust system. probably seems worse than it is because you're not tuned.

Nope. Still don't think its turbo related, except for crankcase.

Yeah, that's not going to help you. You need these at the back of the block, the valve cover is nothing.

Hmm, would it smell burning though if it's going through the flex?
I am tuned, but he said he wanted to stay safe since everything was new, i'm at about 12.0 @ WOT 18 degrees

I thought the back of the block only worked on b20 or b18c motors, since honda removed the black box and plugged it up already on b18b and relocated it to the valve cover, but ive heard so many different things

Put a fresh set of plugs

Drive around till it smokes the. Pull over and take em out

If the smoke is that noticeable youll see it on the plugs or down pipe or exhaust ports
