Competition clutch twin disc splines sheared...
Well apparently I spoke too soon last week about not having any issues lately. Car was making awful racket when trying to go into gear so I towed it to the shop. Once apart found the inner splines on the trans side friction disc completely sheared. Just curious if this is happening to anyone else. The clutch has 6500 miles at 500whp on street tires with three passes on slicks waaaay back when it was freshly built last year.

Re: Competition clutch twin disc splines sheared...
Dont quote me but i think i made around 330ft lbs on pump gas. CC said it looked like an "alignment" issue.. I 100% positively torqued correct numbers and sequence/pattern. My gsr trans has 50k miles on it and main shaft has no run out. Dowels are not damaged where trans wouldnt be seated all the way ect. What really baffles me is the other disc splines are ok meaning that clutch had to have been slipping when this happened correct?

Snapped a quick pic of the input shaft. This is a 50k mile old trans original to the car which started out bone stock 2yrs ago prior to the build.

Looks like the input shaft wasn't fully inserted on the clutch discs. You 100% sure the installed height of the input shaft was correct in the trans? Maybe you had the outer plate or disc upside down.... just a thought. Look slike the clutch dragged a lot too. That heat ring on the friction material means it rubbed on something damn near all the time.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the heat rings.
At the moment that the splines gave way and stripped out heat would have built up in just seconds so it's really no surprise to see the effects.
I'm not a clutch scientist, but after a few uses wouldn't it have done some self-aligning?
With 6500 miles it seems far fetched that it would be out of alignment.
On top of that, the black ring on the clutch material appears to be thin and concentric to the rest of the clutch.
Any idea how CC came to the conclusion that this might be alignment related?

Been there.
I was told my lack of dowel pins was the culprit (small misalignment of the input shaft).

I doubt they are willing to tell you the alloy of metal and the treatments they make the hub from.
That would be great info to have right about now.

Are you sure you had the right discs?
IIRC there's a small difference in input shaft size between hydro and cable trans, if you use the wrong spline style they eventually shear off like seen here.

Well, car is back together. Runs great and new plates feel way better. The rattle when the pedal is pressed is 1/4 of what it was before. I'm not sure if manufacturing process is different or redesigned but it's like an entirely different clutch now for whatever reason. I also had to replace the input shaft so hopefully things hold together this time. Only time will tell I guess

Any type of clutch chatter normally mean something wrong with installation, whether its misalignment or improper torque or sequence and should be addressed immediately.
