Cleaning carbon off of valves?
I am about to introduce my b16 head to my newly built b18c1 botttom
Well, my valves are coated with carbon, pretty thick (00'SI head, 50k) I was wondering how i can get them back to bare metal?

Pull the head appart (make sure you keep track of what valve came from where) and use some gun cleaning solvent. CRL or CLR is what it's called. Use a brass bristled brush to do one valve at a time. Tedious, but it'll do the job. Hell, might as well give the valve seats a makeover too since you're going to have it all appart anyway.

Re: (IslandSi)
okay, is there any way to clean the face of the valve. I didn't want to pull it aprt until i replace the valves-
Can you use solvent and the brush on just the face... with the valves still in the head?

pics of when i started-
I will post pics after i am done too. So far i can say- brash brush, carbon steel brush, brake cleaner, sea foam, aircraft remover...don't do ****. I found a very fine sanding disc that does wonders- (brass brush for a nice finishing touch though)

Re: (Jester_Si)
thats how mine looked, turned the head over, poured seafoam in the chambers and let it sit, put more seafoam every 30 mins or so after about 3 hours hit it with a brass BBQ cleaning brush..... looked perfect

A friend of mine just took his head to a machine shop. They checked and cleaned it for around 100 bucks, and it looks brand new. Probably much cheaper to clean it yourself, but just throwing the option out there.

Two words for you-> OVEN CLEANER.
Spray it on, wait then minutes, carbon wipes off.
Just be careful you dont leave any carbon deposits on the valve seats,
since it tends to come off in fairly large flakes.

I have always used the wire bursh wheel on the bench grinder. The oven cleaner looks to be a good alternative if you don't want to take the valves out. Just use the wire brush with caution

Re: (Jester_Si)
This is mid point, i bought a dome shape polishing bit tonight to finish the inner portion.I also got a big disc to hit the tops again and make them uniform. Coming along pretty good-
I am leaving the intake valves alone? (other than a good cleaning)
