Default Can turbocharging INCREASE fuel efficiency?

I've heard that turbocharging can actually increase fuel efficiency. Is this possible? Since you have to add extra gas to all of that extra air I don't see how it could increase the actual MPG.

yes it does increase full effiency when your not in boost......im assuming better atomization.

The answer to your question is pritty much a yes no answer because its really all in your tuning.
Any car will burn has morre efficiently if you lean it out some and a degree or two of timing..

Turbocharging just stuffs more air into the cylinders to get you more power.
Adding one isn't really gona help your gas milage because you will be burning more fuel to compensate for the air jammed into the cylinder..

You get what I'm saying?

I think it's in the tuning! Naturally you are going to waste more gas when your on it, but out of boost if tuned part throttle you can get better gas mileage.

we noticed about 75-100 more miles a tank on a friends crx, thats including getting on it a few times a day. setup was a junkyard kit, 450s, afc hooked up normally with base settings and no dyno tuning

Did you lean it out a bunch at part throttle or something? That sounds kind of odd with the bigger injectors and afc that your MPG would improve that much.

i cant remember the exact settings we did, but it was like -45 across on low throttle and -35 across on high. this was a while back, it may not have gotten 100 more miles, but i can remember him saying he got 75 extra per tank, still getting on it like normal, ill ask him later about settings

how does adding a big exhaust restriction increase fuel economy?

Yes a turbocharged engine will be more economical for the power it can create vs. a big displacement NA motor. But just taking your 40mpg honda and adding a turbochager will not yeild 40+mpg. Not gunna happen.

Me too. That would be like 70 MPG. Not gonna happen.

I think he means 200 to the spot where there is a 1/4 tank left.

That's believable. Kind of an odd way to say it though.

Whaaa? That's 800 miles a tank. And I'm assuming you still have the stock fuel tank, right? That's no larger than 13 gallons. Nooo way that's right. I get about 200miles a tank, but I'm always on the throttle. Anyone with a boosted car is, no matter what. If you can resist, then I give you props.

Now that makes sense....I was gonna say, I know honda's are good for fuel efficiency and all but 800 miles to the tank, BY GOD!

really odd way. i almost reached across the internet to slap him. lol. yah i think also they say bigger injectors sometimes tend to give better off boost gas mileage because of how fast/slow they open in comparison to smaller ones. when i had the afc hack on my car running dsm 450's. i made it from miami to tampa with like a lil over quarter tank left. before when my car was stock, and i lived in tampa and used to go tampa to miami, i used to end up just about at E consistently.

Just adding a turbo charger will definitely not increase fuel economy. Personally I didn't lose much either though. Maybe 1 to 2 mpg, depending how hard I drive.

I have heard of some creative tuning some people have done for off boost conditions that has netted better overall mpg.

On Gary and Randy's site (the ones that *i think* originated with the adaptor plates on hf manifolds) they both got 1-2mpg better than before the turbo. Of course not all variables are controlled (impossible for a car you drive everyday) but it just shows it will not kill gas milage.

I think one way someone put it (I have no idea if it holds true or not) is say you're accelerating up to the speed limit, before you would have to give it more throttle to get to the speed limit, at a decent rate. Well with the turbo, you would only press the throttle half the distance of that and it spools and gets you to that speed limit, at the same rate, but less throttle. But then you also have bigger injectors etc, so I have no ******* clue.
