brand new turbo blown??WTF
earlier this month i ordered a garrett t3/t4 turbo from pheonixturbo.com,brand new. today i was mounting the turbo to the manifold and getting the oil drain/feed flanges set up for tomorrows install. then, just curiously i covered the oil drain hole and blew with my mouth in the oil feed hole to see if everything was sealed and good to go,when i hear air coming from the turbo exhaust outlet. now i know if there is air seeping threw something, leaking out the exhaust oulet, then of course oil at 70+psi will leak thru as well. wtf,i just bought this turbo BRAND NEW,and its already blown? i mean does this sound normal, becasue to me it doesnt.

Alot of chargers work on a pressure sealing system. It takes oil pressure to push the seals out to create a good seal. I would first contact Pheonix turbo and see what they have to say.

beyond this, you also create help to create a better seal on the piston ring turbine seal once the shaft gains speed.
feel free to install the turbo just as planned and give me a call toll free for any assistance 1-877-23-TURBO
thanks
Ken

yeah,i put the turbo on and what i expected was right.
at idle the turbo smokes, and not a little cloud here and there. its noticably smoking, and enough to leave a trail from where i just came from.
what should i do now ken?
thanks for any help

What size oil feed line are you using? -3 or -4? Did you prime the turbo before startup?

with the amount of turbochargers we are moving, we actually answer the question pretty frequently, with only 3 Garrett warranty issues in the last year
first, i want to clear up that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY TO "BLOW" A SEAL IN A TURBOCHARGER we don't know where this came from, or who made it up . but, to "blow" a Garrett piston ring seal, you would actually have to starve the turbocharger completely of oil and in a sense "weld" the piston ring into the shaft. (i've seen it many times and it's not pretty)
we've found that there are usually three main causes for smoke at idle:
1.improper oil feed or drain sizing:
- (must be a -3 feed line with at least a -10 drain)
2.improper oil drain routing:
- (must reenter the pan above the oil fill level, so as not to cause restriction on the return(think osmosis), also cannot have any low areas in the drain line, must be directly routed from the turbo to the pan at the highest point)
3.improper crankcase vent:
- (this is the most common problem that noone thinks they have. we recommend using a catchcan connected to the crankcase vent and to the intake of the compressor, to draw the crankcase pressure out of the engine. the positive crankcase pressure will always try to find the quickest way out of the engine possible, which is usually the oil drain fitting. with the oil drain being a full gravity feed, and no pressure. this causes a backup in the CHRA, and the turbine seal acts as somewhat of a failsafe by burning off the excess oil. this will prevent any damage to the chra that can be caused by viscosity breakdown and coking of the oil.)
i got you covered

Re: brand new turbo blown??WTF (PhoenixTurbo.com)
PMed ken,thanks
and for the rest im using a high pressure rubber hose for the feed line,a little bigger then a 1/8th npt hole. and a -10an steel braded hose for the drain.
also i was wondering....
here in VA its starting to get cold and winter is coming in. right now im running 15w-40 synthetic oil. should i switch to 10w-30 right now for winter,so that during cold nights/mornings,when i start my car the oil wont be so thick.?
