Default boost and the zex 59300 cam

how many sohc guys in here are boosting with a zex 59300 cam? Just wondering how you like it and if I do go boost whether or not I should keep my cam in or throw the stock cam back in.

I have the cam in my car. No dyno #'s yet but the cam seems to pull very nicely.

I also think the cam helped me with spool up. the car seems to bring the turbo on alot faster than what it used to.

I should have #'s in a couple of weeks. just waiting on my new turbo to show up.!!

Hey Brian, hows does the cam sound? I read/heard it makes some noises, and it's a loud cam, but not sure if it was improper installs? Can't wait to see what your new set-up will make!

sweet sounds like I should keep the cam in if I go turbo then

as far as noise...yes it is a very loud cam. Makes your valves pretty noisy. Not unbearable though.

I have mine set at .007 in the intake and .008 on the exhaust side.

The cam does make a little bit more noise than the stock one,but nothing too bad.
I have full ferrea valve train with this cam also.

I believe this cam will make substantial power once i get the new turbo on and get it tuned in. and 30psi shoved in this sucker!!

I am just waiting to see how you like it and how it does on the dyno. I think this will be the cam to have for us high boost SOHC'ers. I better be the first to know how it does so I can order it up before we start putting the motor in!!

I run that cam and its very noisey but sounds cool...I dont mind it, I dyno'd 205hp with 6psi on my d16, i like the cam a lot.....I think it definetly helps with the power that im making, the boost likes the high lift the cam provides, all in all 59300 cam gets

ok, call me retarded but why would the cam make the noise? The tons of lift it has?

yea its pretty loud, but thats what the compcams website lists the specs as..

and yes to answer ladysman...i think it is loud because of the high lift.

I think it also has to do with the stiffer valve springs....i think that has to do with some of the noise...it just makes the valvetrain noisey. I think it sounds cool kinda has a lub lub to it

I got the same cam and the same specs on the valve adjust

My cam isnt at all that noisy compared to stock
i hear the same amount of noise.. dont know if u guys arent adjusting correctly or what
anyways i was wondering if i could keep the cam with my currently turbo kit i am pieceing togheter... this thread just brings my hopes up and confirms that i indeed can keep it with turbo and that it will be worthed

I have been running the 59300 for the past four years on my D16Z6 turbo/nitrous race engine. I run 23-24 PSI and the cam works great. My combination makes peak power at 6900rpm, but only drops 15hp at 7900rpm, so the cam makes for a very broad and useable powerband for the gearing in the stock transmissions. The noise that most people hear from these cams is due to aggressive opening ramps. It is a design term for the rate at which the cam lobe is opening the valve. It is the key to building lots of bottom end torque, with out loosing HP up top. Basically, with agressive ramps you get short seat timing (good for TQ) with plenty of "area under the curve" for high RPM airflow. The only down side to aggressive ramps is the slight increase in noise. To open up the valve faster, you need to input more energy in a shorter period of time, and that is what is making the noise. If you don't want noise, you can put "soft" ramps on the cam and the noise will go away.....so will about 7 ft. lbs. of TQ.

So the cam will stop making power at about 7K??

Damn it i was hoping to be able to turn my motor 8500. but i guess i will have to back it down a little

Zex man, also what turbo do you run again?? what is the trim sizes?

The cylinder head air flow is what primarily determines the powerband of the engine, not the cam. The reason my engine only drops 15 hp at 1000 rpm above peak is that the engine is running out of airflow, not camshaft. A ported head will peak much higher. You will be able to run your engine to 8500, but why? You need to look at the powerband of the engine and your transmission gearing to determine the best shift points. Your best shift points are generally going to be around 7200-7500 on a stock head D16Z6 engine.....turbo or N/A. I run a Turbonetics 60-1 hi-fi with a TO4 turbine section.

partly because of what TravSi said about valvetrain being stiffer etc..but the lobe also has further to go to "hit" the valve/valvetrain...so a tighter lash wont hit as much.

Example:

If you were punching someone and brought ur hand back say 3 inches from their body and went straight forward, you might be able to hit them hard..but imagine if you brought your arm even FURTHER back like say 12 inches its gunna leave a nice welt

With 245hp of nitrous going into the engine, the turbo spools up in about .3-.4 sec. after gear changes. It is a very tight TO4.... .58 A/R on a stage five wheel. Full boost is reached at 5500 rpm.
