Default b20v, or lsv or non vtec

Im building a boosted motor-
i have a 96 civic coupe
I juts bought a greddy turbo kit and will be using it as my basis for my turbo build. TD05h-18g

I have a prepped b20- je pistons, eagle rods, built oil pump, honda bearings, fresh from the machine shop. STOCK SLEEVES.

I also have a LS the needs machine work, stock pistons but could re-use my eagle rods for it.

I have a nicely built GSR head, ported, expoxied runners, great valve job, springs etc etc...

I have a lightly cleaned up LS head- almost stock other than light port work.

I am aiming for 300 eventual HP. I know my turbo will run out of breath shy of this, but if it were your engine would you use the b20? and know at 300 with good tuning it will be safe? or go to the LS and spend the money to prep that but run stock pistons?

LS block with VTEC head. And the GReddy can do 300whp no problem. even in its stock form.

since the b20 is almost there... sleeve it.

if not, use the ls block, throw on arp rod bolts, and use the vtec head

i wish i would have sleeved the b20 from the get go....

hindsight.. damn.

I like the idea of the b20 for the size. what is a safe power level with the b20- and relatively low rpms? under 7.5k. Should i just assemble the b20 short block, sell it off with the je pistons and stock rods etc? I know the answer is yes, but what I WANT to hear is run the b20 at 300 whp and ill be fine.

I know the power isn't the issue with cracking sleeves, its the deto. that comes with boost and high compression, but im sure there is a formula for approx. hp #'s while being on a good- not great tune, that a b20 will live at... right?

yea, a buddy went to mondello porting school, they taught him how to reshape the intake port / runners to create a better flow. I has a N/A LSV in my dc2 special edition, running 14.6's swapped on the head and a header ran consistent 13.4's. its a bad head.

Eh, I don't trust epoxy.. want to make a runner smaller, weld it

i trust it, its a time proven method. its special **** meant for cylinder heads. only in the intake side. too much heat in the exhaust would crack it apart. and besides its been in this head for 4 years now.

If the proper epoxy is used and the surface is prepped right, its good. I always hear about guys trying to use jb weld and I cringe lol... although epoxy is normally used for intake manifolds.

Any pics? I'm curious

he just added some to reshape the port to almost make it a funnel, ill see if i can grab a pic of it tomorrow. The guy who did it was a friend, he knows his **** and does it legit.

I am currently trying to trade the head and a ls block to a buddy for his tired needing a rebuild GSR. Im also trying to throw money at him too..

Gimme the head :p

I'm curious as to why you reshape a VTEC intake port to begin with, unless he went a little too big and had to to get back in spec.. normally epoxy is used to make a port smaller/flatter. Same with intake manifold runners

epoxy has been used in heads for a long time, if the prep is right and the right product is used it will last, i wouldnt use it in the combustion chamber but the ports are fine.

My friend did a bunch of porting professionally then decided he made better money doing it on the side. He would tell me about how many guys just wanted big flow numbers, and that what they got. HE did so many, what he calls, horrible jobs because he said people get hung up on numbers. Its not the volume of air necessarily but how the air mixes with the fuel, its speed and density. He reshaped the roof just before the valve, he said it funnels the air down creating more air speed (in a n/a motor), it also give the air a straight path, instead of the big turn (pocket) behind a stock GSR valve. Nasty dirty pic, but u get the idea.

This is all theory on N/A engines.... probably similar with FI, but im am far from an expert.

o yea, he flowed them to make sure all ports were the same. he had a home made machine, so he said the actual numbers didn't mean a thing, just used it to get all the ports the same.
