B16 or GSR head for boost?
I did a search, and can only find info on all motor cars. There seem to be thories but nothing real concrete. If i were to pick, it would be the GSR, since the combustion chamber is supposed to control detonation a little better. But then I see some of the old pro cars running b16 heads(Lisa Kubo/fast car). Does anyone have any real info they can share? Thanks.

Neal, it honestly doesn't matter. I've seen both support HUGE power levels. They flow pretty similarly, flow bench wise, with the slight edge going to the b16. Porting will even the score, but thats only needed for BIG power levels. Just pick the one that allows you to use the intake manifold you want to use.

Re: B16 or GSR head for boost? (Arturbo)
Ill take your word on it, thanks. Some say the B16 it better for big bore applications (unshrouding the valves). Any more thoughts......sorry, I just want more technical info.

If you take a b16 head off a block and replace it with a gsr head, the GSR head will yield a higher compression because the combustion chamber is different. As far as turbo is concerned it doesnt matter which head you use because the amount of power extracted will be determined by the tuning.

Depends on the circumstances... b16 flows a bit better, and has a more combustion chamber volume. Low compression is good for boosted applications.
Its ALL in the cam

I thought he was being sarcastic... I was under the impression that the gsr had a tad more midrange and the b16 had a tad more top end, neither enough to even matter, and thats stock of course.

I've seen flow charts of both stock B16 and stock GSR heads from Alaniz overlapped, and they are the same lift for lift. There is a slight nod to the GSR head for combustion chamber design - more quench - but in the real world there is no difference between them. Run whatever falls to hand, it will support more power than you plan to make.

I am not being sarcastic at all, I meant it, just didn't feel like going into depth about it. I don't care what the flow bench says, or the theories we could come up with why or why not, I have seen with my own two eyes that the B18(GSR) head will out perform a B16 in a boosted application. If it didn't matter why would all the cars (at least 98%) in Hot Rod NHRA run the B18?
It might flow close to each other but they won't run that way down the track, unless we start racing flow benches.

When you guys are saying that the GSR head will **** all over the B16 are you talking about the head itself or the internals? Cause yeah the GSR cams will **** on Si cams. Just wanted to know exactly what was being compared here. My b16 head will **** on yours... with CTR cams dont have em so it doesnt matter.lol.
