Default SaltyBeaR25's D16Y8 turbo build prospects. Suggestions on the next move?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if a D16y8 can possibly be a high rpm engine with turbo application? The plan is to run the D16y8 with turbo (least 1.5 bar boost) aiming for 300 ~ 500 hp for highways runs ( no drag or quick pulls) max speed. I have a transmission from a HX with 3.77 gears and getting body work done to make sure the body can with stand the high speed and not be bumpy or stacking at 180mph or more. I know it a way different build from others but this is that I have to work with in my area. Any information with be greatly appreciated.

as long as the crank is balanced ......you have a good damper (crank pulley)...... good valve springs / valve and retainers....... and pick a cam designed to work with the rpm range you need.....

An EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauge is recommended to make sure your exhaust temperatures don't increase too much from holding the gas pedal down so long (over 15 seconds). You might want to accelerate for 15 seconds, then maintain speed, then accelerate another 15 seconds. You'll need a lot of highway to get to 180mph, and suspension that is set up for it also.
I'm don't have experience going 180mph, but maybe an oil cooler, a good radiator, a 3" mandrel bent exhaust, and a large wastegate (preferably 44mm or larger).

Not sure I really understand the purpose of a build like this but, to each his own. A Y8 can make good power up top but requires the appropriate cam and valvetrain to support it. I'd also recommend a tall-geared transmission for it. As for the speed, why? Unless you live on the autobahn, there aren't many places commonly traveled here in the states where this can be achieved safely. I live off an old country highway with about a 2 mile stretch that is partitioned by only a slight curve, easily a 100mph curve. In that short stretch, it seems to go really quick >120mph. I hit 140 easily and am pretty sure I've seen 150-160 but it went so quickly..

thank you for the info , never though about that before. But I’ll give it a try after the car gets back from the body shop

Thank you for your input on the situation, I’ll have to get more information on these parts. Thanks again

The area that I live in has a lot of highways and freeways, and most days late at night not a lot of people on the road at those times even on the weekends. As far as the speed goes well I don’t expect to go 180 plus, just wanting to make sure the body and chassis can with stand the high speed for safety reasons... as far as the Y8 thanks for the information and the transmission the HX model civic has the only transmission that has the gears that I need for the possibly to go that fast. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you for your information on this situation.

To answer your question - yes, the D16Y8 can be a high RPM turbocharged engine. How high of an RPM are you wanting to go to? 9K? 10K? Higher? Without cylinder head work, adding RPM won't gain you anything as power will start dropping when the head can't flow enough air to keep up (~7500 - 8000 RPM on a stock port head). Connecting rod hardware become highly stressed at high RPMs, so make sure you have good quality parts. Others have already pointed out concerns you'll need to address with other systems. Just remember that to go incrementally faster requires exponentially more power, and more power means more stress / breaking things.

What size tires are you planning to run? What body work (aero?) are you doing?
