Hondata Fuel Tuning Noob Questions
Well Ive spent some time learning about tuning and reading up on anything and everything I could find. Im sure i've missed some things though. My question to the people doing their own street tuning or anyone who is knowledgeable in tuning when you have all of your ducks lined up in hondata, you start tuning the fuel map, how do you approach the fuel map? I have done some datalogging, keeping my S fuel trim at 0 and adjusting each column independently, however when I do these adjustments they create hellacious spikes and no smoothness in the 2d map. Am I approaching the tuning incorrectly? She idles nice and smooth at this point but I understand the need for smooth maps. Any tips? Thanks guys

re: Hondata Fuel Tuning Noob Questions
It is best to start with global fuel changes to get the maps "in the area". Use your overall fuel multiplier first to get cruising a/f around 14.5-14.7 (some may prefer slightly different cruise a/f, but this is approximate).
Then make changes in the areas needed broadly. For example, change a group of 8-12 cells a percentage to get that area of the map closer.
Then make changes to smaller areas as needed (ie: 4-6 cells).
Be sure to retest after each change, and make sure your closed loop is DISABLED.
If you notice your 2D fuel maps are really choppy, you probably are not running the correct ignition timing in that area. If your ignition timing is optimal, the fuel maps will be fairly smooth. A little up and down from one data point to the next is normal, but not huge spikes and valleys...

re: Hondata Fuel Tuning Noob Questions
I really appreciate the help my friend! So if I understand the multiplier to be the fuel trim tab/ then input your new injector size/ adjust it up or down until the idle sits at stoich, instead of trying to tune the map by hand/ then move on to larger adjustment once the base is set?
If my ignition timing is incorrect, would too little timing create the large spikes? I know I do not have it advanced, my plugs tell me that the spark is occurring pretty early. Thanks again! I would like to keep learning about the fine details of tuning, I could sit and watch it all day long haha the hardest part is not having anyone to watch but instead learning it entirely on my own. I will figure it out with a little help.

If you are seeing spikes and dips in the fuel curve in 2D mode that you can't smooth out (ie: you make the corrections, then retest and the spikes are still there or possibly just shifting around), then you are running too little timing advance.
You can adjust your overall fueling in two ways:
Adjust the "new fuel injector" size, or use the "overall fuel trim"
Adjusting the injector size will also compensate the throttle tip-in and cranking fuel settings. Adjusting the overall fuel trim number will Only adjust the fuel multiplier (won't alter throttle tip-in and cranking fuel). We typically try to get the overall fueling in the right area using the injector sizing first, then fine tune using the overall fuel trim. Every tuner tends to prefer one method over the other for different reasons. You will find what method you prefer in time.

re: Hondata Fuel Tuning Noob Questions
I did add a couple degrees across my timing map today and noticed it improved the overall performance and seemed to richen up the tune I have been using a bit.

re: Hondata Fuel Tuning Noob Questions
hmm that makes sense now. I was off on the wrong foot trying to adjust the fuel manually when my base wasnt set first. I am going to have a shop do the final tuning. Its something I have been trying to learn but im sure watching him do it will make more sense and I can be sure my tune at that point is safe and correct. I really do appreciate the help my friend. Wish you guys were closer haha
We don't need to be closer with eTuning: eTuning Services, Remote engine tuning via email | HA Motorsports
You can add quite a bit in the lower load areas of the map and see a great improvement in driveability. Be carefully when adding timing under load as you can easily cause detonation.

Use more descriptive thread titles. I'm changing it for you, one time.
Read the manual in my signature. It's for a different program but the processes are very similar and it will be a good resource for you.
