Chipped PR4, Big Time problems, PLEASE help
I just took my ECU into a computer shop and had a chip installed. 91 integra GS OBD0, w/IHE. The car is now running crazy, it seems to run rough 2500-3000 rpms with little power then suddenly hits a imaginary vtec, cant keep it from spinning the tires in 1stat all. It really hammers down in the real high rpms only f I apply WOT. After about 30 miles the CEL came on, I turned the ignition off, and the CEL came on when I restarted. After the third time right in a row the CEL never came back on but the car still ran wierd. I was cruising for about 20mins doing 60 @3k and it just started bogging. It wouldn't run normal until I wrapped it out a couple times and would bog unless I tried driving @ WOT. I never got a CEL during or after the major problems... Could it be the solder job, a bad connection, or could the chip be bad please give me opinions! I have work Monda, and this is my DD. Thanks, Kyle

Please help me out, I know most the people on this site have dealt with chipping. Anyone ever heard of these symptoms? I need this thing running. Thanks again.

So you would say that is the issue, and not a bad chip, or bad solder job? I bought the chip that had a map meant for a setup like mine. This thing literally barely runs at certain rpms. I definately do not have the money for a $200-400 tune on a nearly stock motor right now... I have seen other kids cars chipped that ran pretty well without a tune. Thanks again!

If it was a bad chip or bad solder job, you'd run in limp mode the entire time.
It all depends on the tune and the tuner who made it. You've disclosed no details about the tune on the chip, so we can't really help you.

Well I did say that supposedly it was meant for IHE. The chip is supposed to have a bit ignition timing advance and more fuel, 8300 rev limit. I have IHE. It stumbles from takeoff to about 3k in 1st then just rips the tires loose even if I am only at like 1/2 throttle. Then on the freeway it seems to bog compared to before chipping, if I'm cruising in 5th and try to mash it. When it seemed like it was going to die because it was crapping out so bad it never threw a CEL. Sometimes it seems to run perfectly fine though. By the way as you accelerate it has spots through the rpm range where it like has fake vtec, I apply throttle consistent, car accelerates shoppy like.lol Thanks for helping!

Sounds like the tune sucks and the engine is hesitating in certain areas. Why you continue to drive on it this way, I have no idea. Get a stock chip or get a real tune are my two suggestions. Good luck.

You need to get properly tuned... I'm 99.99% positive that's your problem.
Try not to haul *** until you get it fixed, unless you've adopted detonation as a hobby.

Well I had to drive the fricken car afterwards. I had to drive a ways just to have it chipped. I don't continue to drive it this way, that's why I have been online searching for answers. I don't have anyway to get anywhere now, not even to work on monday. The computer shop broke the stock chip when they took it out so I guess I'm f'd. I hate these cars, what is wrong with a carburetor anyway? To make one of these even run you have to pay $400 to have mr.tuner tune it.

Well I have built several bikes to produce some big power, such as my 450R which is putting down 59.5hp at the wheels. I have experienced deto playing with compression, I know quite well what it sounds and feels like on a single cylinder, will it be noticeable from the outside on these cars? The only way it will run fine is if I'm mashing it all the time... Babying it is more when it was running like poo poo.

LOL simmer down there, Feisty McAngrypants.
I believe the OBD0 ECU also has the J1 bypass right above the chip. Cut that connection on the circuit board, it should bypass the chip and revert to stock operation until you can get it tuned.

Oh I think you interpreted me wrong.lol I wasn't getting fiesty... Thanks alot for your help guys! So let me get this right, to tune my car the tuner would remove and program my chip according to dyno/af graphs?. I didn't have mine socketed, so I may have to get a new chip kit, add more mods, then have it tuned right after. I just found I live like 30 miles from Speed Factory =]

Re: Chipped PR4, Big Time problems, PLEASE help
There isnt a J1 to cut on obd0 because the stock chip is supposed to be there so its either drop a stock chip in the 28pin or tuned.
Well your familiar with detonation with Carb cars but you still decide to run this car out on unkown fuel and ignition maps. who ever made the map didnt make it correctly also a base map is just that "A base to get your car to a Tuner safely" alot of people consider a car tuned on these maps and are not. yes you could drive this to work on monday just be careful and get the problem fixed or go to the junk yard and find a PM6 to run at the time being.

So a PM6 is plug and play? What models will have that ECU? To have my car tuned will I need to get a socket for the chip? i pulled the code that I had originally got when I had the chip put in and it was a code one. O2 sensor, which I have driven a few thousand miles without a sensor anyways with no CEL.lol I reset the ECU and decided to drive it and if I blew it up I would get rid of another toy and build this one badd. It ran fine. Crisp, clean, a little popping in the exhaust on decel, and definately more power than before chipping. I don't know, I will look into finding a donor ECU. I don't want to spend money on tuning until I at least get and IM, TB, and better headers to throw on as well..

PM6 is a stock ecu from a CRX si or 88-91 Civic SI commonly found at the junk yard. OBD-0 PR-4 come out of 90-91 Integras. either ecus will run a stock B18 non vtec motor with no problems. if you must 1 of those might be sitting at the junk yard.
As far as your ECU now it sounds fine but your car needs tuned right. you shouldnt need a socket unless the guy soldered the chip to the board directly witch would be stupid a dip socket is only $4. I would think he soldered a dip in so then you could remove the chip and either use an emulator or burner and chips to tune your car. if you dont wanna learn to tune then you should take it to a tuner if you want to learn yourself there are some free programs to try but you will need some tuning hardware. Burner to burn chips, Emulator for real time tuning (not needed but makes life eaiser) Datalog cable to review and save the data.

Also if your looking into OBD-0 tunning look into a program called TurboEdit i ran it on my 0bd-0 PR4 Integra for a few years. Also check out www.PGMFI.org

If your O2 isn't getting signal, more than likely you're running rich as hell by default, which would explain the decel popping also. So, soft (necessary) driving should be fine for now, you'll need new plugs before you tune, and probably a can of BG44k

Re: Chipped PR4, Big Time problems, PLEASE help
Well, I couldn't find any ECUs and drove it to work all week. It has ran fine, definately rich as f though, it's obvious when you can smell it... That would probably explain why after being on cruise control @ 60 for 10-20 miles it starts to cut out. What's wierd is it will gurgle unless I hit WOT, but idle fine. I shut it off and fire it right back up and it runs fine, although the O2 sensor is disabled I'm not throwing any other codes.. I would like to get my manifold and TB on, and I ordered one of the velocity stacked k&n filters and a 3" short ram =], then have speedfactory dial it in. I'm not going to get the Hytechs because a friend has talked me into a lil turbo project this spring. He made a good point, why spend 3K to get 185hp when I could spend 3k and get 250+hp =]]]. I have heard of the bg44k stuff but have never seen it, anywhere special I can get it?

Re: Chipped PR4, Big Time problems, PLEASE help
Your fuel and ignition maps are different at WOT than at negative manifold pressure. The lack of O2 readings contributes to that gurgle. Sigh, if only you had a datalogger.
