Default CarMD, any good? OBDII Diagnostics reader

I know this may sound really bad, but I stumbled upon an ad in PC world Touting "carMD" which is a reader for OBDII cars which is suppose to help you troubleshoot issues you have with your car. I wanted to know if this was any good and or if there are better alternatives to this.

Are there any kits for laptops for hooking up Honda Civic pre OBD-II to your computer? Any that can be recommended? Maybe ones that work with various cars and has various connections?

Just found the review on consumerreoport.org:http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/c...ic-tool_ov.htm

So I guess I just need my second question answered, does anybody know of any good OBD-0,1,2 kits, software, whatever that will allow me to hookup my laptop directly to the car instead of getting a specialized handheld tool that will cost a fortune and has limited functionality?
