I noticed some moisture on the inside of my cylinder walls that had started to rust a bit. So I talked to my local machine shop and he was too busy too do it and suggested I get a hone. So I looked for the simplest one I could find. My question is if I use 81mm hone on an 81mm cylinder can I take it out too far.

its not the size that would take off too much material, its the grit, rpm, and how long you spend in each cyl. they usually come in size ranges. get the grit thats recommended by your ring manufacturer and only go so far as to remove the surface rust. its not real hard, a few minutes on youtube and a decent drill it will be cake. clean the motor immediately afterward, use lots of hot slightly soapy water, blow it clean with air after that and get oil on the cyls so they dont rust again

Cheap basic coffee filters from the grocery store and transmission fluid to clean the cylinder walls after some brake clean. The dirty shows up well on white coffee filters and the thick transmission fluid promotes sticking to it/the filter.
